Software Engineering Research Group at the Department of Computing, University of Turku, is recruiting one fixed-term Project researcher or Doctoral researcher (or secondarily Research assistant) for “Dining Flow project funded by Business Finland. The position is full-time. The person selected for the position is expected to start the work as soon as possible by mutual agreement. The position is fixed-term and ends on 30 June 2025with a possibility for extension.

In the Dining Flow project, we research ways to enhance the experiences of diners and kitchen personnel in Self Service Restaurants (SSR). Simultaneously, we aim that dining is overall more sustainable (i.e. reduce food waste and save energy) by deploying technology and utilizing diverse types of data to build decision making tools to make more informed decisions. The restaurant where the research mostly takes place is the living lab of Flavoria.

To achieve the goals of the Dining Flow project, we now search for a new team member to join our group with the following profile: A project/doctoral researcher specialized in data analytics to help us to gather information from Flavoria and its surroundings across different sources, and to analyze and make predictions based on data.


Who we are looking for

We search for a person who wants to learn more on the topic of SSR from the point of view of how data analytics can be used in this context to enhance experiences and promote sustainability.

Requirements:

  • MSc in computer science, software engineering, computing engineering, or a related field
  • Good software engineering and programming knowledge and skills
  • Data management knowledge and skills
  • Fluent English (oral and written)

In addition, we also consider as an advantage knowledge and skills of the following:

  • Experience & knowledge on different sensors
  • Internet of Things (IoT)
  • Data science and Machine Learning knowledge and skills

We also appreciate if you have capabilities to listen to others, are interested to work in multidisciplinary and multicultural teams, and look for approaches to bring consensus in groups.

We are primarily searching for a project researcher or a doctoral researcher. If a suitable candidate cannot be found, we may also consider an applicant who has more or less completed all coursework for MSc degree in a relevant field and is ready to start Master's thesis in a topic set by the task. In this case, the job title will be research assistant.

Qualification requirements

The qualification requirements of the position are stated in the University of Turku Rules of Procedure: https://www.utu.fi/en/university/organisation.

A person selected for the post of project researcher is required to have a higher university degree. When assessing the merits of the applicants, special emphasis will be placed on competence and practical expertise in the field in question.

A person selected for the post of doctoral researcher is required to have the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Turku. In addition, when acquiring their degree or otherwise, they are required to have demonstrated the ability and motivation to undertake postgraduate studies and the capacity to complete a doctoral degree in accordance with the research plan.

 

Salary & trial period

The salaries are determined in accordance with the University salary system for teaching and research personnel. For a project researcher / doctoral researcher the salary will be in the beginning of the employment around 2440-2600 euros/month, depending on previous experience and skills. For a research assistant the salary will be in the beginning of the employment around 2220-2350 euros/month, depending on previous experience and skills.

The amount of the salary is defined when the employment contract is prepared.

A trial period applies to the position. The length of the trial period depends on the starting date of the employment.
