The Medical Bioinformatics Centre at the University of Turku has an open position for a Senior Researcher, starting in November 1, 2024, or as agreed. The position is for a fixed term for three years, but it is possible that it is extended.

The Turku Medical Bioinformatics Centre (MBC) is part of both the national Biocenter Finland research infrastructure network and the European-wide ELIXIR infrastructure. We conduct internationally high-level research in the fields of bioinformatics and computational medicine. We develop computational data analysis tools as well as statistical and machine learning methods for interpreting large molecular and clinical datasets in medical research, in close collaboration with leading medical research groups and biobanks. As a core facility of the Turku Bioscience Centre, we also support high-quality research by providing bioinformatics support to academic research units and healthcare organizations.

Job description

The MBC core facility offers support for analyzing data generated by modern biotechnologies. We are looking for an expert in data analytics and bioinformatics to join our team and take responsibility for the core facility's basic operations. Key tasks include providing expert support, conducting data analyses, and developing the core facility's operations in collaboration with the center's staff and stakeholders. Additionally, the role involves communicating with collaborators and networks, preparing and reporting on funding applications, and participating in the organization of training offered by the unit.


Who we are looking for

Applicants are required to have a broad understanding and experience with bioinformatics tools and the analysis of various omics data. Additionally, strong programming skills (e.g., R, Python) and the ability to work with version control tools (e.g., Git) are essential. The role demands initiative in problem-solving, self-direction, and excellent collaboration and communication skills. Proficiency in both spoken and written English is necessary. The applicant must hold an academic degree in a relevant field.

Salary and trial period

The salary is determined by the collective agreement system of Finnish universities, aligning with the research personnel category. The demand level of the senior researcher position is 4-7.  In addition, a salary component based on personal performance is paid. The total average monthly salary, depending on previous experience and skills, is around 3800 - 4700 euros per month at the beginning of the employment.

The position is subject to a six (6) month trial period.
