Intelligent Control for Zero-Emission Manufacturing ICEMAN

ICEMAN project pioneers sustainable manufacturing by exploring connections between manufacturing heat signatures and surface integrity. In the context of the industry's substantial contribution to global CO2 emissions, ICEMAN aims to optimize productivity, environmental impact, and product lifecycle. Our prior work in heatmetry and surface characterization suggests that manufacturing heat signatures correlate with process performance and surface integrity. Objectives include developing a high-speed heat flux sensor tool and an AI-based real-time control system. ICEMAN innovatively employs Heat Flux Sensors for precise, instantaneous in-situ measurements. Work packages involve characterizing forged billets, conducting machining experiments, evaluating surface integrity, and deploying predictive models, with outcomes promising a validated intelligent control system optimizing manufacturing for sustainability and zero-emission practices.

The doctoral thesis topic can be specified according to the researcher’s own interest around these themes. The doctoral researcher/project researcher can participate in the other activities of the research group in different ways. The doctoral dissertation will be conducted within the PhD program at University of Turku (
