We invite motivated individuals to join us as a fixed-term Doctoral Researcher, specializing in high-temperature thermal and environmental barrier ceramics, with an emphasis on manufacturing processes such as thermal spray and laser additive manufacturing, along with material characterization. This pivotal role is situated within our esteemed Faculty of technology, Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering in the Digital Manufacturing and Surface Engineering (DMS) research group, offering an unparalleled opportunity to contribute to our ambitious research vision.

Position Details:

  • Start Date: 01.01.2025 or as agreed upon
  • Duration: ending 31.8.2028
  • Project: Part of the Research Council of Finland funded SOLACE project
  • Location: University of Turku, Finland
  • International research exchange: Approximately 1 year of combined international research exchange to collaborators in Sweden/Switzerland/UK/Austria

Research Focus:

Your role will involve:

  • Preparation of solution precursors and suspensions
  • Processing of thermal and environmental barrier ceramics using thermal spray and laser additive manufacturing
  • High-temperature performance evaluation, including high-temperature corrosion, thermal cyclic fatigue, and thermal shock
  • Simulation and modeling activities, such as simulation of laser-material interaction and CALPHAD simulation for microstructure or phase prediction
  • Extensive lab-scale and large-scale synchrotron experimental characterization of specimens before and after performance evaluation

The researcher will also undertake courses to fulfill doctoral degree requirements.

Qualifications and Requirements:

The qualification requirements of the positions are stated in the University of Turku rules of Procedure. A person selected for the post of doctoral researcher/project researcher is required to have a higher university degree. In addition, when acquiring his or her degree or otherwise, a doctoral researcher is required to have demonstrated the ability and motivation to undertake postgraduate studies and the capacity to complete a doctoral degree in accordance with the research plan. The degree must be completed before the end of the application period.

If the selected person does not have a study right for a doctoral programme when they are selected, their title will firstly be project researcher and they must apply for a doctoral programme during the next possible application period (Fall 2024/Spring 2025). In particular, please pay attention to mandatory skill level in English. Fluent oral and written communication skills in English are required in the positions.

Mandatory Requirements:

1. Proficiency in English

2. Demonstrated experience in experimental research and scientific writing

3. Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in any of the following fields: Preferably in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Chemistry, Materials Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, and Ceramic Engineering. However, any other relevant fields will also be considered as long as the curriculum is relevant to the job posting.

Optional but Advantageous Requirements:

4. Practical and theoretical knowledge in one or more of the following:

  • Solution precursor or suspension preparation
  • High-temperature thermal and environmental barrier ceramics
  • Thermal spray techniques (e.g., plasma, flame)
  • Laser-based additive manufacturing (e.g., direct energy deposition, powder bed)
  • Lab-scale material characterization (e.g., SEM, XRD)
  • Large-scale characterization (e.g., Synchrotron, Neutron diffraction/imaging)
  • CALPHAD simulation
  • Artificial intelligence/machine learning

 

Salary & trial period:

The salary is in accordance with the University salary system for teaching and research personnel levels 2, including a personal work performance component. The total salary will be approximately 2400-2600€/month, depending on previous experience and skills. The amount of the salary is defined when the employment contract is prepared. 

The position is subject to a six-month trial period.
