PostDoc Researcher in the area of intelligent control of networked systems

The University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI) invites applications for a PostDoc Researcher in the area of intelligent control of networked systems, at the Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence (IDSIA USI-SUPSI) within the Department of Innovative Technologies (DTI), located in Lugano. The degree of employment is 100%, with a contract starting on 01.09.2026, or on a mutually agreed date

Duties and responsibilities

• Work on the EU project PHYS-EXO with a focus on Physical AI for exoskeletons, developing, implementing, and validating AI-based and vision-based controllers.
• Conduct innovative research in the field of Physical AI for exoskeleton, working on 3D mapping approaches, semantic-based reasoning, and controllers.
• Design and implement experiments to explore new approaches and techniques in the aforementioned areas.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to tackle complex challenges in related fields.
• PhD students supervision.
• Support the LEON robotics team (https://leon.idsia.ch/) in research and application-oriented projects.
• Publish research findings in high-level international conferences and journals.

Requirements

Technical background and skills 

• PhD in the field of machine learning and robotics.
• Programming skills (Python, C++, Unity, ROS, ROS2).
• Experience with real exoskeletons for experimental tests.
• Good track record of publications.
• PhD students supervision.

Soft skills

• Very good communication skills in spoken and written English. 
• Ability to work in a team and in a collaborative environment. 
• Autonomy.
• Projects writing and funds acquisition.

Desirable but not strictly required 

• Control theory for robotics.
• Navigation and machine vision for robotic systems.
• Open source software development.
