TU Wien is Austria's largest institution of research and higher education in the fields of technology and natural sciences. With over 26,000 students and more than 4000 scientists, research, teaching and learning dedicated to the advancement of science and technology have been conducted here for more than 200 years, guided by the motto "Technology for People". As a driver of innovation, TU Wien fosters close collaboration with business and industry and contributes to the prosperity of society.
At the Institute of Architectural Sciences of the Faculty Architecture and Planning at TU Wien, the position of a University Professor in the field of “Building Science and Human Ecology“ with permanent (full-time) contractual employment is to be filled as of 01/01/2023.
This is a professorship regulated by § 98 of the 2002 Universities Act (UG).
The position as professor for Building Science and Human Ecology has been allocated in TU Wien’s development plan to the following „Energy and Environment“ and „Additional Fields of Research“
The professor position "Building Science & Human Ecology" focuses on fundamental and core concepts of an integrative and user-oriented approach to architecture and the built environment. Thereby, the position is intended to contribute to teaching and research at the Faculty of Architecture and Spatial Planning of TU Wien in view of the complex interfaces of climate, environment, technology, form and design. The position’s scope lies on integrative approaches, design methods and the examination of performance aspects, which are gaining relevance in the sense of knowledge-based design in both teaching and research in tertiary educational facilities in the field of architecture and planning.
Beside and in addition to the classical foundations of “traditional” building physics, the position “Building Science & Human Ecology” in its scientifically and technology-based focus shall emphasize on integrated optimization approaches (pertaining to energy, hygro-thermal, architectural lighting and acoustical aspects) at different scale levels of the built environment and their relation to architecture. As such, both building-related and anthropocentric aspects (e.g. Design for All, Comfort Theory, etc.) form an important outline for this position. Moreover, the development and application of digital optimization and simulation environments is an indispensable prerequisite in the mentioned domains.
Applicants for the position are expected to bring excellent qualifications both in scientific and practical sense with them, pertaining to the areas of building physics and construction requirements as well as building and building services systems. Thereby, highly-relevant domain knowledge of the fields building construction, material-science, physics, and computer science seem essential. Furthermore, evidence of extensive and excellent scientific publication activity at the highest international level, successfully completed scientific (third-party funded) projects, patents or technical developments, as well as development contributions to the field of professionally relevant construction informatics and computer-aided simulation are expected.
The research and teaching activities in the Bachelor/Master and Phd area (in German and English) are expected to be further developed and articulated in close collaboration with the permanent senior staff of the research unit as well as with the colleagues from related disciplines. These interdisciplinary approaches are required to be frontrunning in searching for solutions to the current challenges. Furthermore, national and international cooperations as well as research networks should be utilized, extended and consolidated. These profile-forming efforts are to be accompanied by continuous efforts pertaining to acquisition of third-party funding for scientific research projects.
Pertaining to the spearhead character of the position, leadership qualities and social skills as well as willingness to active participation in faculty affairs and committees are expected by applicants. Moreover, a high degree of competence and willingness toward interdisciplinary cooperation’s as well as social skills and the ability to work in a team are required.
