Central Analytical Facilities (CAF)

NII PET-CT Unit (Node for Infection Imaging)

Consultant Radiologist

NII (SU) PET-CT Unit, Tygerberg Hospital, Cape Town

Ref. SAF/154/0626

About the Unit

The NuMeRI NII PET-CT Unit hosted by the Central Analytical Facilities (CAF) of Stellenbosch University (SU) at Tygerberg Hospital (TBH) in Cape Town, South Africa, undertakes clinical and research imaging across oncology, cardiology, neurology, pulmonology, and infectious diseases. A broad range of radiopharmaceuticals is used, many of them labelled on site in the Unit's own radiopharmacy. As an EARL-accredited PET-CT Centre of Excellence, the Unit produces harmonised, trial-grade quantitative imaging and supports national and international research collaborations.

The NII has a close working relationship with both TBH and with SU’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS), through its Divisions of Nuclear Medicine and Radiodiagnosis.

The aim of CAF (including the NII) is to ensure optimal utilisation of expensive multi-user research equipment in the service of the research community. NII operations can be divided into three categories:

  • Research;
  • Private clinical practice (for cost recovery purposes);
  • Reciprocal support of state service provision when required and capacity allowing.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a specialist radiologist to join our multidisciplinary team. This unique position combines research image analysis, clinical reporting, and academic collaboration in a state-of-the-art PET-CT and radiopharmacy research facility. The incumbent will play a pivotal role in advancing medical imaging research while contributing to clinical service delivery.

  • To the extent that capacity allows, contributing towards the clinical service of TBH’s Divisions of Radiodiagnosis and Nuclear Medicine, including reporting.

Research Imaging Analysis

  • Research analysis and reporting of medical imaging studies for research clients, including extraction of quantitative imaging parameters, reporting according to research protocols, and completion of clinical research forms (training provided).
  • Applying standardised response assessment systems (e.g. RECIST) to clinical trial imaging.
  • Refining existing CAF/NII imaging protocols and workflows, including development of new protocols, to maximise sustainability and research impact of the Unit.
  • Contributing to planning of medical imaging services provided by CAF/NII to such an extent that the research interests of the national research community are best served and can function cost-effectively and sustainably.

Patient Care and Clinical Supervision

  • On-site clinical supervision and management of patients and research participants on the day of their studies, which may include assistance with difficult IV access, prescription of medications, interviewing patients, and limited in-person clinical patient care.
