Entrepreneurship and innovation at Luleå University of Technology was established in 2006 and today has about 20 employees with a broad competence base. Our goal is to be an international center for the development and dissemination of future ideas in entrepreneurship and innovation. Entrepreneurship and innovation include organizational development with a particular focus on business development based on innovative products, services and production solutions, as well as ways of managing and organizing businesses. The research group collaborates with large national and international companies, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), policy makers and other research groups. Research results are produced in close collaboration with industry and other community actors. To strengthen our research in business model innovation, we are now seeking a PhD student.
Entrepreneurship and Innovation comprises organizational development with a specific focus on firm development based on innovative products, services, production solutions or management modes.
The Swedish industry faces major challenges as new technologies related to AI, automation, electrification and digitization radically change the way in which companies create and deliver value. These technological transformations provide opportunities for companies to grow and realize the vision towards sustainable industry, i.e. simultaneously realizing economic, social and environmental benefits. To meet these visions, companies need to innovate their offerings, business models, and organizational configurations. Also, companies needs to increasingly look beyond organizational boundaries and form new kinds of collaboration with ecosystem partners. Of particular interest are innovative small and medium sized firms (SMEs) that drive change in the ecosystem and promote regional growth. The project will involve collaboration with industry addressing practically rooted problems. A specific focus will be placed on process- and manufacturing industries as they account for a large number of CO2 emissions, are present in the region, and currently face important pressure to develop and incorporate more sustainable technologies. Key issues will be focusing on how new radical technologies, such as AI or blockchain or new production technologies can be applied for increasing value creation and diminishing environmental impact. The project also includes creating a basis for industrial development and communicating this with participating companies through workshops, training courses, manuals and academic publications.
A PhD student position involves being part of a research group where you, in collaboration with others conduct scientific work. It includes collecting and analyzing data, and writing scientific articles, together with others in the research group and individually. The PhD student will also be a part of the newly started Research school of industrial management at LTU, which has sustainability and digitalization as the overall themes. In total, about ten doctoral students will be recruited to the research school in 2019 and 2020. The scientific work for this PhD student position will be conducted within the above-described project, and the PhD students will be responsible for relationship building and interaction with industrial partners. A PhD student position also involves participating in research courses, presenting research nationally and internationally, and participating in seminar activities within the research group. In the doctoral student position, departmental duties such as teachers can also be included (max 20%). Completed postgraduate education after a corresponding four-year full-time postgraduate education (consisting of both approved postgraduate courses and an independent doctoral thesis) results in a doctoral degree in entrepreneurship and innovation.
We are looking for candidates who preferably has a master's degree in business administration or in industrial engineering and management or equivalent. You have a strong interest in the research project/topics described above. The position requires good knowledge of oral and written communication in English. Good knowledge of the Swedish language is a merit. At the same time as the position requires good ability to work closely with the rest of the project group, it also requires a strong own drive to be able to independently plan and manage one's own work and be responsible for carrying out tasks within given time frames. Being a PhD student is about developing new knowledge and therefore creativity and ability to handle uncertainty and ambiguity is needed. The industrial nature of the research project with many partner companies requires that you have high social skills and are good at managing different stakeholders' expectations.
