Post-doctoral Fellow in Resonance Ionization Laser Spectroscopy with Radioactive Ion Beams at Cern Medicis & Cern

(ref. BAP-2019-65)

The KU Leuven Institute of Nuclear and Radiation Physics (IKS) specializes in the production and use of radioactive ion beams for the study of nuclear structure and nuclear reactions, as well as the use of radioisotopes and radiation as probes for the study of solid state materials and of fundamental symmetries at the low-energy particle level. The Interdisciplinary Research Group is expanding this research into new domains, including the production of novel medical radioisotopes with the isotope separation online (ISOL) technique. Research is performed at the CERN ISOLDE and MEDICIS facilities, as well as at the SCK•CEN, Belgian’s national nuclear research center located in Mol. The research outputs are part of larger collaborations including radiochemistry, radiopharmacy, and research hospital partners locally (UZ Leuven, UZ Brussel, UZ Ghent) and at the European and international levels (e.g. MEDICIS-Promed, Hôpitaux Universitaires de Genève, Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Lausanne, National Physical Laboratory UK).

Responsibilities

Within the IKS Interdisciplinary Research Group, you will share your responsibilities along two main lines.

First, you will carry out research in the production and purification of radioactive isotopes using laser resonance ionization techniques. You will coordinate the installation, commissioning, and operation of the MEDICIS Laser Ion Source for Spectroscopy Applications (MELISSA) laboratory at CERN and study in particular how to enhance the production of the Tb isotopes, which are the topic of the Tb-IRMA-V project between KU Leuven, SCK•CEN and CERN.

Secondly, you will work on integration and development of the Laser Ion Source & Trap (LIST). The LIST device has been developed over the last decade: it has seen many iterations at the RISIKO mass separator facility in Mainz and was successfully applied at ISOLDE, demonstrating its capabilities for ion beam purification. The LIST will be a valuable asset for the repertoire of ion source configurations at ISOLDE and MEDICIS. Your responsibility will be to ensure that it may be used reliably at those facilities, while also studying how to improve the device for increased beam purity, for increased resolution in resonance ionization laser spectroscopy, as well as a medium to handle radioactive ion beams of higher intensities for the next generation RIB facilities in Europe.

Profile

We are looking for a self-motivated post-doc researcher with a background in laser physics or engineering, atomic physics, nuclear physics, or equivalent, and with a keen interest in radioactive ion beams and medical applications of radioisotopes. You are interested in joining an international team of researchers at the cutting edge of science and technology. You have a critical mind and you hold a PhD degree in laser, atomic, nuclear physics, or equivalent. Knowledge of radioactive ion sources, RF and high power electronics, solid state lasers, and LabVIEW is a bonus.

Offer

We offer a 12-month post-doc position (renewable) to be carried out at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, where the ISOLDE and MEDICIS facilities are located. You will be given the opportunity to carry out your research independently but with the support of a large team of laser specialists and ion source experts, have coordination responsibilities within a large international research network (MELISSA), and disseminate your results through participation in international events and publications.

CERN is Europe’s laboratory for particle physics, home to the Large Hadron Collider and many more facilities like ISOLDE and MEDICIS, and hosts more than 13,000 scientists and engineers from all over the world. KU Leuven is a major participant in experiments at ISOLDE and in the MEDICIS facility.
