The Department of Medicine Huddinge (MedH), Karolinska Institutet (KI), research is conducted within six units and three research centers and encompasses around 70 different research groups. The ambition of MedH is to be a leading international department within medical research and education.

 

Description of the subject area

The Gastroenterology Unit at MedH conducts leading research in the field of hepatology. The unit is integrated and located in close connection with the medical unit (MU) Upper GI Disease at the Karolinska University Hospital, which includes gastroenterology, upper abdominal surgery, and GI oncology. The Unit is a cornerstone in a comprehensive environment with clinical, translational, epidemiological research and education. It works as a greenhouse for new ideas and research projects, is well prepared for implementation of new research findings and offers comprehensive clinical training.

The Karolinska University Hospital and KI have a long tradition of successful research and clinical care in pancreatology and pancreatic surgery. To strengthen this area further, we are now looking for a lecturer in gastroenterology with the specific aim of developing the benign pancreatology research field to the highest international level.

Your mission

We are looking for an experienced and internationally recognized researcher who can develop an independent research group within the pancreatology area. Besides your own research, you are expected to play an active role in the teaching activities at MedH with responsibility for one of the training courses in internal medicine for medical students. MedH is responsible for all medical education in internal medicine at the Karolinska University Hospital in Huddinge. As a clinical lecturer, you are expected to take a large part in this educational task and different teaching duties will be part of your job. Administrative and leadership positions in education may be part of the position depending on your qualifications and interests.

Your research should be strongly anchored in a parallel clinical activity and the position shall therefore be combined with clinical employment as at least specialist physician in gastroenterology at MU Upper GI Diseases, Karolinska University Hospital. Clinical employment is expected to be 30 percent with activity both in- and outpatient work.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer with focus on research, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, you must have demonstrated an excellent scientific expertise, a good pedagogical expertise, and a good clinical expertise (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

The employment will be combined with an employment as a specialist physician, assistant chief physician, or chief physician in gastroenterology at ME Upper GI Diseases at the Karolinska University Hospital and therefore you must have a Swedish MD with specialist competence in gastroenterology and fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden.

Since the position includes clinical work, you must, besides English, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish (C1 level according to the common European reference scale, CERS).

Assessment criteria

The Senior Lectureship has a focus on research. The assessment will weigh qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (3), pedagogical expertise (2), leadership, development, and collaboration expertise (2) and clinical expertise (2).

For employment as Senior Lecturer at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

 

It is particularly meritorious that you have demonstrated:

  • An upward-pointing scientific activity in the pancreatology field.
  • A track record of publications in international scientific journals, particularly as a senior author.
  • Well-documented teaching experience in medical education, including different forms of teaching.
  • A leading role as course leader in medical education.
  • Successful scientific leadership in the form of supervision of medical students and doctoral students.

  

It is meritorious that you have demonstrated:

  •  Extensive experience of clinical work in pancreatology.

 

In addition, you must have completed 10 weeks of training in teaching and learning in higher education or have equivalent competence in accordance with the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions' recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher. If such training is lacking at the time of employment, you must undergo such training within the framework of the employment during the first year of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
