Introducing our school, the C2MA Centre and the RIME team

Institut Mines-Télécom and IMT Mines Alès

The « Institut Mines-Télécom » (IMT), is the leading group of engineering schools in France, with 11 public engineering schools across the country training 13,500 engineers and PhDs.
IMT Mines Alès is one of these engineering schools and has 1,200 students (including 200 foreign students) and 350 staff. It has two campuses in Alès and is also based in Montpellier and Pau.

IMT Mines Alès has 3 teaching and research centers working in the fields of materials and civil engineering (C2MA center), the environment and risks (CREER center) and artificial intelligence and systems engineering (CERIS center).

C2MA center

The Center for Materials (C2MA) has three research teams: PCH "Composite and Hybrid Polymers" research unit (UPR), the DMS "Durability of Eco-Materials and Structures" team (UMR CNRS n°5508 LMGC1) et the RIME Team « Materials-Environment research team » of the UMR CNRS n°5254 IPREM2.

RIME Team

The RIME team is located in Pau and is associated with IPREM laboratory (UMR CNRS 5254). One of the team's research themes concerns indoor air quality and the development of exhaustive or specific sampling and analysis methods for trace organic pollutants (Volatile Organic Compounds or Semi Volatile Organic Compounds) in the air and at the material/air interface.

Job description

The RIME team "Research on Materials-Environment Interactions" (UMR IPREM 5254 CNRS), https://www.imt-mines-ales.fr/recherche-doctorat/les-unites-de-recherche/rime at IMT Mines Alès in Pau is recruiting a 13-month Research Engineer in Analytical Chemistry, specialised in the analysis of traces of organic compounds by GC-MS (VOCs and SVOCs in air and at the material/air interface). The fixed-term contract may be extended for a further 11 months on another similar project, for a total of 24 months.

The job is part of the MISTRAL research project, funded by ADEME (French Agency for ecological transition) and conducted in partnership with CSTB (Scientific and Technical Centre for Building).

The new “AGEC” (Anti-waste and circular economy) law and the new regulations on the management of products, equipment, materials and waste (“PEMD”) from the demolition or renovation of buildings require the eco-organisations responsible for collecting and sorting these “PEMD” to draw up a list of hazardous substances likely to limit re-use, recyclability or the incorporation of recycled materials into construction products and materials in the building sector.

The MISTRAL project therefore proposes to develop methods for the identification and on-site detection of hazardous substances that could act as a barrier to the recovery of construction materials. In this way, the search for these substances in “PEMD” will ensure that they can be reused or recycled under safety conditions that are satisfactory to all those involved in the sector.

The person recruited will be responsible for :

- Carrying out a state-of-the-art review of the literature on the subject

- Developing a laboratory method for sampling and analysing hazardous substances (VOCs/VOCs emitted by materials) using GC-MS. This method will then be transposed to a portable GC-MS with a view to deploying the method on materials sorting and recycling platforms.

- Exploiting, interpreting and formatting the results

- Drafting progress reports, contributing to the drafting of project reports, presenting results at project steering committees.

- Promote the results in the form of publications in international scientific journals and presentations at conferences.

Candidate profile and general assessment criteria

Skills, knowledge and experience required:

The candidate will have experience in the analysis of organic compounds using chromatographic techniques. He/she will have theoretical and practical skills in GC-MS and in techniques for preparing trace VOCs/SVOCs samples in the air and/or in materials (sampling on adsorbent cartridges, SPME, etc.). The candidate will be autonomous in carrying out the tasks assigned to him/her and in producing deliverables (drafting reports, minutes, publications, oral presentations, etc.). The candidate will also be expected to make proposals for the development of original methods for characterising hazardous substances in materials

Skills, knowledge and experience appreciated :

  • Involvement, engagement
  • Technical skills
  • Ability to work autonomously in a team of around 10 people
  • Organisation
  • Writing skills
  • Adaptability
  • Responsiveness

Level of training and/or experience required :

  • PhD in analytical chemistry highly recommended
