Introducing our school, the C2MA Centre and the RIME team

Institut Mines-Télécom and IMT Mines Alès

The « Institut Mines-Télécom » (IMT), is the leading group of engineering schools in France, with 11 public engineering schools across the country training 13,500 engineers and PhDs.
IMT Mines Alès is one of these engineering schools and has 1,200 students (including 200 foreign students) and 350 staff. It has two campuses in Alès and is also based in Montpellier and Pau.

IMT Mines Alès has 3 teaching and research centers working in the fields of materials and civil engineering (C2MA center), the environment and risks (CREER center) and artificial intelligence and systems engineering (CERIS center).

C2MA center

The Center for Materials (C2MA) has three research teams: PCH "Composite and Hybrid Polymers" research unit (UPR), the DMS "Durability of Eco-Materials and Structures" team (UMR CNRS n°5508 LMGC1) et the RIME Team « Materials-Environment research team » of the UMR CNRS n°5254 IPREM2.

RIME Team

The RIME team is located in Pau and is associated with IPREM laboratory (UMR CNRS 5254). One of the team's research themes concerns indoor air quality and the development of exhaustive or specific sampling and analysis methods for trace organic pollutants (Volatile Organic Compounds or Semi Volatile Organic Compounds) in the air and at the material/air interface.

Job description

The RIME team "Research on Materials-Environment Interactions" (UMR IPREM 5254 CNRS), https://www.imt-mines-ales.fr/recherche-doctorat/les-unites-de-recherche/rime at IMT Mines Alès in Pau is recruiting a 6-month Research Engineer in analytical chemistry or process engineering.

The job is part of the ADEME T(erre)'Air research project entitled "Contribution of earth-based walls to hygrothermal and visual comfort and to indoor air quality in buildings", carried out in collaboration with the SIAME laboratory in Anglet.

New low-carbon construction solutions are emerging in response to climate change. The use of earth- based construction products, i.e. those based on raw earth, is proving extremely popular, as they hold great promise for limiting environmental impact. The water sorption properties of clay materials and a few studies suggest an ability to retain pollutants. Used to form interior walls, they could help to manage air quality. This project will study this capacity in depth to identify the mechanisms behind this retention and the laws that govern them. This will make a significant contribution to current knowledge. Together with the modelling of hygrothermal regulation, retention modelling will be used to develop building comfort simulation tools. These tools will help to justify the use of earth-based walls from a regulatory point of view.

The person to be recruited will be responsible for setting up experimental devices and analytical methods to characterise the VOC sorption processes at the surface of the earth-based materials studied and to assess the permeability of these materials to VOCs. The engineer will also be responsible for analysing and interpreting the results, writing the corresponding reports and presenting the results at project meetings.

Candidate profile and general assessment criteria

Skills, knowledge and experience required:

The candidate will have at least 5 years' higher education, with experience in the analysis of traces of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in air and at the material/air interface (emission, adsorption/desorption) and, if possible, in the study/modelling of VOC adsorption on solid materials. The candidate will be autonomous in carrying out the tasks assigned to him/her and in producing the deliverables (drafting minutes, reports, oral presentations, etc.).

Skills, knowledge and experience appreciated :

  • Involvement, engagement
  • Technical skills
  • Ability to work autonomously in a team of around 10 people
  • Organisation, adaptability, responsiveness
  • Writing skills

Level of training and/or experience required :

  • The candidate will have a master's degree or a PhD
