In the Department of Economic Sciences and Media in the Group of Computational Communication Science at the Technische Universität Ilmenau (Germany) is a vacancy for a

research associate (f/m/d)

for advanced training to obtain research skills and academic competences according to Section 2 (1) of the German Academic Fixed-Term Contract Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz).

The research group of Communication Science esp. Computational Communication Science is investigating the use of digital media and its consequences for individuals and society. The group has an increased interdisciplinary focus and employs mainly quantitative research methods from communication and computer sciences (i.e. manual and automated content analysis).

Your tasks

The position includes the following responsibilities:

  • participation in the group’s research and publication activities, and in the development of research proposals
  • Further academic qualification (habilitation), the content of which is oriented towards the research focus of the department
  • attendance of national and international conferences and publications
  • participation in teaching and the supervision of undergraduate and doctoral students in German and English
  • supporting the group in administration and project management tasks

Your profile

For being part of the selection process is needed:

  • Diploma (Univ.) or Master and a PhD in communication science or closely related subjects completed with outstanding results
  • Advanced research skills and excellent knowledge of quantitative data analysis (in R or similar applications)
  • Programming skills in R, Python or another programming language
  • Excellent knowledge of computational social science methods
  • Very good knowledge of German and English

Following competences are desirable:

  • An interest in interdisciplinary work, communication skills and the ability to work in a team
