Background
The faculty of medicine and life sciences contributes to sustainable solutions for health-related issues as part of the civic Hasselt University. The faculty focusses on excellence in education and research and connects with society through a strong collaboration with our partners. Starting from continuous attention for quality and innovation, the faculty is a breeding ground and magnet for talent with an open view on society, from the region to the world. The Biomedical Research
Institute (BIOMED) at Hasselt University is a highly interactive and well-equipped multidisciplinary institute where both fundamental and applied research is performed to better understand the disease processes of (auto)immune, neurological and cardiac disorders (www.uhasselt.be/biomed/en).
Within this stimulating environment, we are looking for an enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher to strengthen our team.

Job content
In our research group, we study the role of lipids in inflammation and repair processes in the central nervous system. The ultimate goal is to reduce inflammation and promote tissue repair by modulating these processes through nutritional and pharmaceutical interventions. Lipid metabolism is dysregulated in brain diseases such as multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer's disease and plays a key role in regulating immune cell function and brain tissue repair. We investigate how lipids are involved in brain disorders and aim to identify targets based on our findings to develop better treatments. To achieve this, we use cells and tissues from patients, animal in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo model systems, and innovative techniques (e.g., lipidomics, mass spectrometry-based imaging, single-cell RNA sequencing, molecular and metabolic analyses, immunohistochemistry, multicolor flow cytometry, etc.).
We are looking for a motivated postdoctoral researcher with expertise that complements our research group. Depending on the candidate's expertise, the postdoc will be involved in investigating the importance of lipid metabolism in oligodendrocytes during remyelination or studying the influence of nutrition on recovery processes in people with MS. In addition to conducting high-quality research, you will supervise PhD and master's students, actively participate in writing grant applications, and contribute to teaching.

Profile

  • You have a PhD in (bio)medical sciences, biochemistry, or equivalent.
  • You have a proven track record with publications relevant to the research topic.

  • Expertise in neuroimmunology, oligodendrocyte biology, lipid metabolism, nutrition, iPSCs, animal models, or omics data analysis is a plus.
  • You are capable of conducting research both independently and as part of a team.
  • You have excellent writing and communication skills in English.
  • You have strong problem-solving skills.
  • You show initiative.

Offer
You will be appointed and paid as Researcher-expert.
We offer a two-year contract, with the possibility of extension upon positive evaluation. Hasselt University offers its employees numerous benefits.
