The candidate will become a member of the faculty of medicine and life sciences in the Neurosciences department at Hasselt University. The research is conducted at the Biomedical Research Institute (BIOMED). The Biomedical Research Institute (BIOMED) of Hasselt University conducts high level multidisciplinary research to advance progress in human life sciences. High-end technology is used to deliver novel insights in three main disease areas: neuroscience, immunology and cardiometabolic science. BIOMED aims to translate new scientific discoveries into applications that contribute to a healthy society in line with the civic ambition of Hasselt University. 
The Neuroscience department is looking for a motivated lecturer/senior lecturer/professor (60-100%) to strengthen education, research and services related to future-proof data science and multi-omics analysis in the field of neuroscience. We are looking to strengthen neuroscientific research and data science, with strong complementarity with the existing research lines within the Neuroscience and BIOMED departments. Complementarity is also sought with research within the university, the faculty, the BIOMED institute and the LCRC research center

Education task
In the Faculty of Medicine and Life Sciences you are partly responsible for data science, multi-omics and/or neuroscientific education. This includes teaching through lectures, tutorial groups, work sessions and practicals, but also including the (co)coordinatorship of course components. education. You are expected to contribute to meeting current needs within UH education. Contributions and/or coordination for some of the following educational assignments are envisaged. The exact content will be determined in consultation with the candidate (data science, research track (data science / neuroscience), junior/senior internship, grant writing, elective course in BMW master's program, ... as possible examples).

Research mission
You will develop your own research program using future-proof technology including multi-omics approaches and data analysis within neuroscience into the underlying mechanisms and treatment of neurological disorders. The research is complementary to the current research lines of the BIOMED research institute, with good cooperation with the clinical research center LCRC . Bringing in new research technology that can strengthen BIOMED's research priorities is a strong plus. You are also interested in research collaboration with the clinical partners of the faculty.

Profile

  • You have a PhD with a thesis in (bio)medical sciences, medicine, biology, bioinformatics, data science, bioengineering or pharmacy (or equivalent).
  • You have an excellent academic track record with first and/or last author publications in international high-quality scientific journals in the field of neuroscience and big data/data science/-omics.
  • You have relevant postdoctoral research experience, as lead researcher, in the specific research domain.
  • You have a good view of the latest trends and developments in the specific research domain.
  • You have proven experience in applying for external research funding. 
  • You have experience in supervising doctoral students, technicians and/or master students. You have the necessary qualities to lead a research team. 
  • You have the necessary qualities to function within a multidisciplinary research group. 
  • Complementarity with the existing research expertise within BIOMED and LCRC is an added value.
  • You have an extensive (inter)national research/education network in the relevant domains.
  • xperience with academic education is a great added value. You enjoy teaching and convey the lesson content enthusiastically to your students. 
  • Dutch is the official administrative language of Hasselt University. If you do not have a sufficient knowledge of Dutch (CEFR level B2) upon your appointment, we expect you to obtain the required level no later than 5 years after being appointed or at the moment of tenure (usually after an internship of 3 years for senior academic staff). We provide tailor-made language training. Coordinating lecturers must have a command of the language of instruction of the program component at CEFR level C1. We provide tailor-made language training.

Offer
If the candidate is appointed on the scale of lecturer, the agreement will consist of a tenure track of 5 years, with the possibility of appointment as senior lecturer in the permanent framework after favorable evaluation. If you are classified as senior lecturer or professor, you will be appointed to a permanent position after an internship period of 3 years.
