Researcher – Remote Sensing for Humanitarian Purposes

The Center for Security Studies (CSS) at ETH Zurich is a centre of competence for Swiss and international security policy. It offers security policy expertise in research, teaching, and consultancy. We are seeking a highly motivated researcher to contribute to initiatives that use remote sensing technology to enhance humanitarian efforts.

Project background

In this position, you will work on two collaborative research projects at the intersection of social sciences and remote sensing/computer science, both in partnership with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). These projects aim to advance the use of remote sensing technologies, such as satellite imagery and nighttime light data, to improve the early detection of humanitarian crises and support more effective responses. Through your work on these projects, you will contribute to the development of tools that enable humanitarian organizations to better assess and respond to crises.

Job description

As a member of our research team, you will engage in both research and project management responsibilities. Your research work will involve collaborating with colleagues to analyze war damage and humanitarian crises using satellite images and nighttime light data. On the project management side, you will coordinate with partners, contribute to project reporting, and help organize workshops that bring together experts from different fields.

Profile

We are looking for an innovative, highly motivated researcher with a MA or PhD in international relations, political science, conflict studies, or a related field.

Your strong analytical and writing skills, combined with fluency in English, will enable you to contribute effectively to academic and policy discussions. You should be independent, well-organized, and able to work collaboratively within an international, interdisciplinary team.

Experience in the humanitarian sector, expertise in geospatial analysis, and data analysis and programming skills (R or Python) are strong assets.

We offer

We offer a multifaceted and intellectually stimulating position at a world-class university, with a competitive salary. The position is fixed-term for two years, starting in January 2025 (or as discussed).

Working, teaching and research at ETH Zurich

Curious? So are we.

Are you excited about using data science to strengthen humanitarian organizations' ability to help those in need? Then we look forward to receiving your application by 27 November 2024. The recruitment process will start immediately, so early submissions are encouraged.

Please submit the following documents:

  • A letter of interest outlining your relevant skills and motivation for the position
  • A CV
  • One or two single-authored writing samples (e.g. an academic article, policy article, blog post, MA thesis, or PhD chapters)
