Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia - IIT

Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) is a Foundation governed by Articles 14 et seq of the Italian Civil Code, established by Legislative Decree 269/03, converted by Law no. 326/2003 (Article 4 of the Statute), and financed by the State to conduct scientific research in the public interest, for the purpose of technological development.   

IIT is under the supervision of the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Ministry of Education, University and Research and is overseen by  Corte dei Conti (national auditing body), in accordance with Law 259/58 ("Partecipazione della Corte dei conti al controllo sulla gestione finanziaria degli enti a cui lo Stato contribuisce in via ordinaria" - Art. 12).

More specifically:

IIT aims to promote excellence in basic and applied research and to promote the development of the national economy.

The construction of IIT’s laboratories began in 2006 and ended in 2009.

IIT's total staff is comprised of 1762 people from more than 60 countries. Average age is 35 years and 41% of the staff are women. The scientific field is represented approximately by 80% of overall staff. More than 50% of scientific staff comes from abroad. Of these, 35% consist of foreigners and 17% are Italians who returned from abroad. Today, the scientific staff consists of 7% principal investigators, 12% staff researchers and technologists, 40% post docs, 41% Ph.D. students and recipients of scholarships. 

In 2018, State financing received through the Ministry of Economy and Finance amounted to approximately EUR 91 million (deducted spending review amount), of which 80% was allocated to scientific and technological activities. External resources directly acquired by the Foundation, from 2006 to 31/08/2019, amounted to approximately EUR 296 million of which EUR 214,4 million were obtained from competitive projects, EUR 63,3 million from commercial projects and EUR 18,5 million as in-kind contributions. 

To date (December 2019), IIT’s production includes more than 13000 publications, over 200 European projects and more than 40 ERC (European Research Council) projects, more than 900 active patent applications22 established start-ups and more than 40 under due diligence. Since 2009, the Institute’s scientific activity has been further strengthened with the creation of:

  • the Central Research Laboratories  (a network of  4 hubs) in Genoa  
  • 11 IIT research centres in Italy (in Turin, two in Milan, Trento, Rome, two in Pisa, Naples, Lecce, Ferrara and Venice)
  • 2 outstations located abroad (MIT and Harvard in the US) 

All laboratories develop the research programmes defined in the 2018-2023 Strategic Plan.
