Pioneers in genomic science for four decades, the Wellcome Sanger Institute is transforming our understanding of biology and biomedicine through ground-breaking genomics research.

The Institute’s expertise is deep, diverse, and ever-growing. Its research is unrivalled in scale, enabled by people and facilities that are truly world-leading. The Sanger Institute comprises some thirty Faculty, 1300 staff, and five hundred visiting workers spread across six programmes of research. Committed to the principles of open science, the Institute’s work encompasses both fundamental discoveries as well as translational research focused on achieving public benefits.

The Institute seeks to appoint two Heads to lead Science Programmes in Cellular Genetics and Human Genetics. With shared intersections and synergies, these programmes focus on conducting large-scale molecular characterisation of the cells in the human body and studying the genetic causes and biological mechanisms of human disease susceptibility and progression.

Each Head will be responsible for setting and leading the execution of a clear vision for their Programme, aligning this with the wider goals and direction of the Institute, and leading their own research team. They will manage a small faculty team and be important contributors to Sanger’s Leadership Team, reporting to the Director.

Candidates will be world-leading scientists with a vision for science at scale. They will be aligned with the Institute’s commitment to Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion and keen to accelerate the collaborative ethos of the Institute and encourage external partnerships.
