2 - Position description

The Faculty of Engineering, Department Electrical Engineering and Energy Technology, is looking for a part-time professor

More concretely your work package contains: 

Education and Research domain:

  • Applied electrical engineering : Lighting

Education tasks:

  • You will contribute to teaching in the fields of applied electrical engineering, especially lighting engineering, and this both in lighting design, lighting technology, daylighting in buildings and lighting for vehicles and transport.
  • The teaching assignment is at Bachelor's level, in the Dutch-thaught programmes Engineering and Engineering: Architecture and at Master's level in the Architectural Engineering programme as well as in the Electromechanical Engineering programme in the Brussels Faculty of Engineering (BruFacE).

Research tasks:

  • You will participate in the activities of the VUB MOBI research group and build a research line in the field of lighting, in particular in the metrology, radiometry and photometry of clusters of light sources such as LEDs for applications in mobility, especially vehicles and public lighting, as well as applications promoting health&wellbeing.
  • Specific attention is paid to collaboration with MOBI's other research lines. Through collaboration with colleagues inside and outside the department and university, research is carried out and valorised from different perspectives.
  • Through, among other things, the promotion of Bachelor's theses, Master's theses, PhDs and projects and the acquisition of external financial resources at regional, national and international level for fundamental or applied research, you further develop the research group.
  • You communicate the research to the international research community, especially the CIE, and the professional field through the IBE-BIV.

Other tasks:

  • You are committed to the further development and proper functioning of the department, the faculty and the university. Thus, you are expected to actively contribute to the image of the department, the programme, the faculty and the university (e.g. departmental activities, faculty councils, ad hoc committees, student recruitment, study information days, outreach activities, roles in external organisations,...).
  • In addition, we expect you to have a proven commitment to the management of the department, the faculty and the university.

For this function, our Brussels Humanities, Sciences & Engineering Campus (Elsene) will serve as your home base. 

3 - Profile

What do we expect from you?

The candidate holds a master's degree and a PhD in a discipline relevant to the position, such as (but not exclusively) engineering sciences.
 

  • Is recommended:
    • You have international experience at postdoctoral level, as demonstrated through scientific publications.
    • You have experience in acquiring external research funding.
  • You are expected to be active in international networks.
  • You can define new and innovative research strategies.
  • You can work in a team and has proven experience and expertise in leadership.
  • You have pedagogical skills to provide quality academic teaching in Dutch and English.
  • Teaching experience is a requirement.

  • Every first appointment is dependent upon the successful delivery of a teaching session.

Language regulations:

A member of the academic staff who is entrusted with a teaching assignment must also be able to demonstrate that the language of instruction is known at ERK level C1 through a qualification certificate or through an adequate diploma. The VUB also provides courses in, for example, academic English.

The administrative language of the VUB is Dutch. In case of insufficient knowledge of Dutch, the VUB will provide an integration course. After a maximum of five years, a member of the academic staff must demonstrate adequate knowledge of the administrative language (ERK level B2).

4 - Offer

Are you going to be our new colleague?

You’ll be offered an appointment as professor, for an assignment of 0.5 FTE, for 3 years (renewable, on condition of the positive evaluation of the activities), with planned starting date 01/10/2023

You’ll receive a salary linked to one of the scales set by the government.
