The Department of Bioengineering Sciences of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel is active in research, education and service to society in the field of applied biological sciences. The research disciplines in the department include cellular and molecular immunology, parasitology, molecular and structural biology, industrial food biotechnology, sustainable process technology, bio-organic chemistry, plant biotechnology and microbiology. State-of-the-art research infrastructure facilitating top level research is available at the department.
The department is seeking excellent candidates for a senior academic staff position (lecturer/senior lecturer/full professor) at the interface between microbiology and plant biotechnology. The successful applicant is expected to contribute to the continuity of our high scientific and educational standards.
The successful applicant will teach basic, advanced, and specialized courses in molecular biology, genetics and genetic engineering in the educational programs for which the department is responsible (Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Bioengineering Sciences and Master of Science in Molecular Biology). He/she will also supervise master’s thesis and PhD students. Teaching is conducted in Dutch and English.
The successful candidate will develop a research program at the interface between microbiology and plant biotechnology, in synergy with scientists within the Plant genetics and Microbiology research groups. Research areas of particular interest include the molecular study of plant – microbe symbiosis in a pathogenic, commensalistic or mutualistic interaction, and the role of microbiota in the plant rhizosphere. The successful candidate should have appropriate post-doctoral research experience in this domain. The successful candidate is also expected to be familiar with current molecular biology, genetic and/or genomic research methodologies and to apply these in his/her research.
The qualified applicant will develop an independent, challenging research program, leading to acquisition of external funding. The research program should pay special attention to potential applications in the agricultural or biotechnological fields.
The interested candidate is expected to actively participate in management and organizational activities of the Department of Bioengineering Sciences and to contribute to valorization of the research results in the framework of service to the community and PR activities.

As a formal minimum requirement, candidates must hold a PhD awarded on the basis of an original thesis.
Candidates must have a PhD degree in Bioengineering Sciences, Sciences or a related field.
Candidates must show a track record of research activities at the highest academic level and within the research domain of the vacancy. A substantial, international, postdoctoral experience is recommended.
Candidates should also be committed to excellence in teaching at the Bachelor and Master levels.
