at the Functional and Evolutionary Ecology

The Unit Limnology at the Department of Functional & Evolutionary Ecology of the University of Vienna seek to employ an early career scientist experienced in the field of groundwater ecology. The intended focus of the research shall be on the phylogenetic and functional analysis of groundwater invertebrate communities. In depth knowledge on aquatic invertebrate biodiversity and ecology is envisaged. Research shall strongly consider current and future threats to groundwater ecosystems such as climate change and groundwater quality deterioration. Through filling this position, we aim at complementing and extending existing research fields at the Unit of Limnology.
The University of Vienna and the Department of Functional and Evolutionary Ecology provide an innovative working environment of interdisciplinary and international scientists. In addition to high end optical instruments (different kinds of microscopes), experimental facilities (wet lab and climate chambers), state-of-the-art laboratories are available that include basic infrastructure for molecular work, as well as water analysis. The candidate is willing to do field research.

Duration of employment: 6 year/s

Extent of Employment: 40 hours/week
Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 lit. b (postdoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.

Job Description:
The candidate will work on groundwater fauna biodiversity aspects and thus needs a strong background in zoology, aquatic ecology and molecular analysis (e.g. DNA barcoding) complemented by expertise in aquatic invertebrate taxonomy. Additional experience in biostatistics and ecological modelling is of advantage.

Your responsibilities include participation in teaching, publications and in international conferences and interdisciplinary projects, as well as independent research activities and administrative tasks. Participation in research, teaching and administration - (International) publishing and presentation activities - Holding classes due to extent regulations of wage agreement - Examination activities - Support of students

Profile:
The position requires a PhD and a convincing publication record. The successful candidate must show strong commitment to develop and submit project proposals for acquiring third party funding and is willing to mentor students and fellows. The scientific working languages at the Unit of Limnology are English and German.

Further strengths include:
Successful execution of research projects
Co-supervision of bachelor, master students.
Experience in conducting university courses in invertebrate ecology, basics statistics, bioinformatics, limnology and/or groundwater ecology as well as related fields in English and/or German.
Experience in presenting at international conferences and workshops.
Publications in international journals of the respective field.
Skills in communication and team work in an international and interdisciplinary team.
