The Faculty of Technology at the University of Turku is looking for two Professors (full) or Assistant/Associate Professors (tenure track) in Energy Technologies and Energy Storage to join us in building a new area of expertise at the University of Turku. One of the positions will be in materials engineering, the other in any of materials engineering, mechanical engineering or industrial engineering and management. All these units belong to the fast-growing Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering in the Faculty of Technology.

We are aiming for a start date for fall 2025, but we are flexible.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for a Professor or an Assistant / Associate Professor (tenure track) in Energy Technologies and Energy Storage.

We seek candidates whose work is on energy technologies and energy storage in the green transition, such as batteries, battery materials, and hydrogen. The scope of the research can be from understanding fundamental mechanisms by means of computational materials science, to developing materials and devices, to energy system modelling and analysis – research methods can be experimental or computational.

The research profile could be related to one or more of the following:

  • Battery materials and/or systems
  • Hydrogen storage materials and/or systems
  • Energy systems and business models, with a focus on energy storage
  • Industrial energy conversion and consumption
  • Modeling of nanomaterials and interfaces for energy storage solutions
  • Catalysts for hydrogen production or water splitting (e.g. 2D materials, ...)
  • Electrochemical conversion and Solar-to-X
  • Renewable fuels and fossil free energy carriers, in particular hydrogen
  • Turbomachinery, high-temperature heat pumps
  • Gasification, biomass conversion, membrane technologies

This is not an exhaustive list; we welcome applicants whose research complements the research lines at the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering and bring additional value. See here more information about the department

In addition to the research merits, we consider applicants’ merits broadly and value, for example, broad academic, professional, and societal networks; societal impact and outreach activities; experience in technology transfer; industrial and entrepreneurial experience; and multidisciplinary collaboration. For all positions, we value an active approach and enthusiasm for teaching,  educational development, teaching experience and pedagogical studies.

The applicants may be appointed to a fixed-term associate or assistant professorship (tenure track) or to a permanent professor position (Full Professor) depending on their previous academic merits.

  • For the position of Assistant Professor, we seek proactive researchers and teachers beyond their post doc phase yet still at their early academic career, and who already have a proven track record of scientific research.

  • For the position of Associate Professor, we emphasize an international track record of scientific research, teaching experience and societal influence. In addition to these, we value a track record of acquiring external research funding and business collaboration.

  • For the position of Full Professor, we are looking for experienced and internationally distinguished experts who already have excellent publication production and success in obtaining external funding.
