The University of Stavanger seeks an associate or assistant tenure-track professor of economics with competence and experience in conducting field experiments. The position is organisationally placed at the UiS Business School, Department of Economics and Finance. We will consider economists working within the fields of empirical labour economics, economics of education, and behavioural economics.

The main duties include teaching and supervising students, and conducting and disseminating research. The general job description for Associate Professors at UiS gives a more detailed account of relevant duties.

This position is a part of Synapse Lab, a research group committed to develop and investigate interventions that can give people better opportunities to succeed in education and the workplace. Specifically, the researchers investigate measures that help increase effort, motivation and coping in education and work, using large-scale field experiments. It involves the Faculty of Social Science, UiS Business School, Faculty of Arts and Education, and Faculty of Health Sciences. The position is organizationally affiliated with the University of Stavanger Business School.

Tenure track

Tenure-track associate professors are employed for a period of seven years with the main objective to qualify for employment as tenured professor. Tenure-track assistant professors are employed for a period of seven years with the main objective to qualify for employment as tenured associate professor or professor.

A mid-term review will be conducted after a three-year period and a final evaluation at the end of the tenure-track period. Requirements for tenure are stated in "Criteria and Evidence for Recommendation Regarding Tenure, University of Stavanger Business School". Offers of permanent tenured employment are based on the final evaluation, and require that the tenure criteria be satisfied during the qualification period.

Tenure-track appointments are made in accordance with Forskrift om ansettelse på innstegsvilkår. The public defence of your doctoral
thesis must have been held within the last 5 years, excluding leave in connection to childbirths and adoptions. Assistant professors cannot have been employed for more than one year in a regular postdoctoral fellow position in Norway or at a foreign institution

Qualification requirements

Applicants must have extensive knowledge in, and experience with, all stages of a randomized controlled trial: research design, intervention development, data collection, intervention implementation, data analysis, and research dissemination. Recent publications and potential for future research at a high academic level within the subject area will be given priority. At the time of employment, candidates must have a PhD in economics, preferably a recent one.

You must be able to document active, ongoing research at a high academic level and have the potential for future high-level research in the subject area.

It is expected that you have a reflective and conscientious attitude towards your own teaching and supervision. You must be able to document pedagogical and didactic skills relating to higher education, and basic skills in planning, evaluation and development of teaching and supervision. If you do not meet the competence requirement you must complete a university pedagogy course within a period of two years of the appointment start date. The course will be provided by the university.

Norwegian is the language mainly used at UiS. The working and teaching languages are Norwegian and English. It is expected that you can teach and supervise in Norwegian (equivalent to level B2), or another Scandinavian language, within a period of three years from accession. If required, you will be offered a Norwegian course paid for by the university.

The following factors will also be emphasized

  • ability to involve and engage students in teaching where the course's objectives, content and assessment situations are closely interlinked
  • research results published in recognised publications, and references indicating progression in research and publications
  • ability to initiate, obtain external funding for, lead and carry out research and development projects
  • contributed to the use of research-based knowledge in society and that you can refer to results from innovation and the commercialization of research
  • ability to manage heavy workload, inquisitiveness and motivation to contribute to the development of academic and interdisciplinary collaboration at the university
  • good teamwork and communication skills, and ability to contribute to a constructive work environment
  • experience with building partnerships with businesses relevant to the subject area and experience with relevant international research networks and the ability to build networks - regionally, nationally and internationally
