The University of Stavanger invites applicants for a two-years position as Postdoctoral Fellow in Mathematical Modelling of Lithium-based Batteries at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Energy and Petroleum Engineering. The position is vacant from 01 February 2022.

The objective of the position is to strengthen research, and to give researchers/scholars holding a doctoral degree the opportunity for further qualification toward top academic positions.

The qualifying project will be carried out at the University of Stavanger. It is assumed that the appointee will work full time on the project and that she/he will participate in the academic community.

The research project that the Postdoctoral Fellow will be affiliated with addresses the mathematical modelling of modern lithium-based battery systems based on microscopic conservation equations. Fast-rechargeable and high energy density batteries are becoming increasingly important for powering electric transportation modes and consumer electronics, as well as grid energy storage. The increased demand for batteries has led several companies to establish battery production in Norway, including Stavanger, and the EU to launch its Strategic Action Plan on Batteries that seeks to establish large-scale production in Europe.

Considerable efforts are currently made to improve the design of lithium-based batteries and thereby increase their performance, such as overall capacity, charge/discharge rates and service lifetime. Electrode-scale mathematical models of rechargeable lithium batteries can improve our understanding of battery operation, guide the design of new battery cells and support experimental battery research. This project will explore mathematical modelling of modern lithium-based batteries, including battery designs that are developed by local industry.

The modelling will be based on microscopic conservation equations that involve diffusive transport through porous electrodes, energy conservation, Faradaic reaction kinetics and lithium diffusion within electrode particles. Combined with auxiliary models that describe e.g. ageing and degradation of battery cells, the complete model will be used to predict the condition of the battery cell, such as charge density and local lithium concentrations, temperature and heat generation and potential lithium plating at the anode. The project will target both numerical solutions of the relatively expensive complete model, and the development of simpler, reduced-order models using asymptotic methods. Such reduced models can provide deeper analytical insight into battery operation, and allow the study of multiple cells within a battery pack.

It is anticipated that both advanced numerical computations and asymptotic reduced-order models will serve as the main tools of analysis. Depending on candidate profile, skills and interests, emphasis can be given to one, or to both of these complementary approaches.

Project proposal

You must submit a description of a research project within the subject area and plan for its completion. The project proposal must show how you will proceed to carry out the research work, what the key issues and hypotheses will be, what theories and methods you will apply, publication channels and a schedule for carrying out the work. It must be clear from the application in what way the project will add your competence. The project proposal will be included in the competence assessment.

The final project description and progress plan are drawn up in consultation with the supervisor (s) during the first three months of the employment period. It is a prerequisite that you complete the project during the employment period.

Qualification requirements

You must have a PhD with a specialisation relevant for the project. The PhD thesis must have been submitted for evaluation within the application deadline for the position and approved before accession.

You must document recent and active research activities. Applicants that have submitted the PhD thesis within the last 5 years will be prioritised. Candidates that can document significant experience in performing research in close collaboration with industry will also be prioritised.

The following selection criteria will be emphasised:

  • Strong background within mathematical modelling and analysis of conservation equations,
  • Strong background within numerical methods such as finite volume or finite element methods,
  • Experience with mathematical approximation methods, scaling and model reductions,
  • Strong programming skills, experience with optimization methods, code development and background within high-performance computing.

Prior experience within electrochemistry and lithium-based battery research is not a requirement.

You must have good command of both oral and written English.

In the assessment the following criteria will be emphasised:

  • relevance, quality and feasibility of the project
  • submitted scientific work and your personal skills for completing the project within the timeframe
  • international experience and network
  • qualifications within the areas of creativity, innovation and commercialisation of research
  • good teamwork, communication skills and ability to participate in research communities across organisational units
  • ability to work independently in a structured manner
  • motivation, sense of responsibility and accountability, work capacity and enthusiasm for research
