The University of Stavanger invites applicants for a position as Postdoctoral Fellow in Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems. at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. The position is vacant for appointment as soon as possible.

The objective of the position is to strengthen research within the area of cooperative intelligent transport systems for tunnel safety, and to give researchers/scholars holding a doctoral degree the opportunity for further qualification toward top academic positions.

Postdoctoral Fellow is employed for a period of 3 years. The employment period includes compulsory work as teaching and supervision of students.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will be affiliated with the research project “Capacity-boost tunnel safety (KATS)”

The position is partially funded by The Research Council of Norway.

The qualifying project will be carried out at the University of Stavanger. It is assumed that the appointee will work full time on the project and that she/he will participate in the academic community.

About the research project

The KATS project is about increasing the industry’s capacity for research-based innovation to improve the safety of road tunnels domestically and internationally. The goal is to raise the multidisciplinary research, collaboration and competence capacity amongst companies, enterprises, authorities and the research environment.

Safe and efficient flow of traffic within the road network in general, and tunnels in particular, play a critical role in general notion of public safety. More automation is expected to be seen on future roads and tunnels with emergence of self-driving and fully autonomous vehicles and fully automated road-side infrastructure.  

However, in the transition period to a fully autonomous transport many systems with various levels of automation will have to coexist together in a hybrid environment on the road and in tunnels. Ensuring the safety of road tunnels in such heterogenous environments is therefore of utmost importance. In recent years, significant progress has been made within the areas of information and communication technologies and cooperative intelligent transport systems. As a highly multidisciplinary field, tunnel safety and emergency management can benefit from such progress to facilitate the transition towards future autonomous vehicles and roads.

This postdoctoral project explores how C-ITS and CCAM (cooperative, connected, and automated mobility) can contribute to tunnel safety. It will also investigate the use of real-time and risk-aware decision support systems and digital twins for road and tunnel safety.   

Research statement

You should submit a research statement describing your research interests, academic history, and future directions. In addition, the research statement, in connection with your research background, must show how you will proceed to carry out the research work, what the key issues and hypotheses will be, what theories and methods you will apply, publication channels and a schedule for carrying out the work. It must be clear from the application in what way the project will add your competence. The research statement will be included in the competence assessment.

Most importantly, the research statement should elaborate on how you will apply your current competence within the ICT field towards road and tunnel safety.

The final project description and progress plan are drawn up in consultation with the supervisor (s) during the first three months of the employment period. It is a prerequisite that you complete the project during the employment period.

Qualification requirements

You must have a ph.d. with a specialisation relevant for the project (e.g., in computer science, electrical engineering, or intelligent transport systems). The ph.d. thesis must have been submitted for evaluation within the application deadline for the position and approved before accession.

The applicant is required to document research experience within at least one of the following subjects:

  • cooperative intelligent transport systems (C-ITS and CCAM)
  • decision support systems for safety critical systems
  • artificial intelligence (i.e., machine/deep learning) and automation for automotive and/or transport
  • digital twins
  • vehicular and/or industrial communication
  • risk modelling for safety using sensor fusion data

You must have good command of both oral and written English.

In the assessment the following criteria will be emphasised:

  • relevance, quality and feasibility of the project
  • submitted scientific work and your personal skills for completing the project within the timeframe
  • international experience and network
  • qualifications within the areas of creativity, innovation and commercialisation of research
  • good teamwork, communication skills and ability to participate in research communities across organisational units
  • ability to work independently in a structured manner
  • motivation, sense of responsibility and accountability, work capacity and enthusiasm for research
