The University of Stavanger invites applicants for a PhD Fellowship in Marketing at the UiS Business School, Department of Innovation, Leadership and Marketing. The position is vacant from August 2022.

The doctoral program is designed to produce graduates that are able to contribute to the advancement of marketing theory, methods, and practice. The program focuses on developing the doctoral students' theoretical knowledge and methodological skills required to become successful marketing academics. After successful completion of the program, we expect our graduates to be placed at leading research institutions. 

The selected candidate will be working with a team of dedicated research-active faculty, with degrees from internationally recognized universities. The marketing faculty continuously publish in leading academic journals in marketing and strategy, including the Journal of Marketing, the Journal of Marketing Research, Management Science, and the Strategic Management Journal. While the main place of work will be the University of Stavanger Business School, the selected candidate will also be given the opportunity to visit other leading international research institutions (e.g., to attend doctoral seminars and work with faculty).

The hired candidate will be admitted to the PhD program in Social Sciences. The program includes relevant courses to about six months of study, a dissertation based on independent research, participation in national and international research environments, relevant academic communication, a trial lecture and public defence. The appointment is for three years with research duties exclusively, or four years with both research and 25% compulsory duties. This will be clarified in the recruitment process.

Research topic

The fellowship will fund a PhD project within Quantitative Marketing Strategy.

While the PhD project will accommodate the selected candidate’s research interests and qualifications, research areas of particular interest among the marketing faculty are digital organization and business models, social and organizational networks, marketing and management of platforms and ecosystems, governance of inter-organisational relationships, as well as competing firms’ marketing decisions.

Project proposal

As an applicant, you must prepare a preliminary project proposal for a doctoral project within the subject area, which explains the problem, relevance, theoretical and methodological approach. Your preliminary project proposal will be included in the application assessment.

During the first three months of the employment period, the project proposal and progress plan will be further developed in cooperation with your supervisors and completed for the final plan for the PhD-project. A project proposal template can be found here.

Qualification requirements

We are looking for applicants with a strong academic background in business and other disiplines that are relevant to marketing research, such as mathematics, statistics, economics, engineering, psychology, and sociology, and who are interested in an academic career in research and teaching, to apply.

You must demonstrate a solid command of both oral and written English, strong analytical skills, and have completed a five-year master’s degree (3+2) (or possess corresponding qualifications that could provide a basis for successfully completing a doctorate) with a grade point average of B or better for both the coursework and the master thesis. If you are finalizing your degree in the spring of 2022, you are also welcome to apply.

Applicants with a degree from an institution with a different grade scale than A-F, and/or with other types of credits than sp/ECTS, must attach a confirmed conversion scale that shows how the grades can be compared with the Norwegian A-F scale and a Diploma Supplement or similar that explains the scope of the subject that are included in the education. You can use these conversion scales  to calculate your points for admission.

Emphasis is also placed on your:

  • good command of quantitative research methods
  • motivation and potential for research within the field
  • professional and personal skills for completing the doctoral degree within the timeframe
  • ability to work independently and in a team, be innovative and creative
  • ability to work structured and handle a heavy workload

Requirements for competence in English

A good proficiency in English is required for anyone attending the PhD program. International applicants must document this by taking one of the following tests with the following results:

  • TOEFL – Test of English as a Foreign Language, Internet-Based Test (IBT). Minimum result: 90
  • IELTS – International English Language Testing Service. Minimum result: 6.5
  • Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) og Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) from the University of Cambridge
  • PTE Academic – Pearson Test of English Academic. Minimum result: 62

The following applicants are exempt from the above requirements:

  • Applicants with one year of completed university studies in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom, USA
  • Applicants with an International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma
  • Applicants with a completed bachelor's and / or master's degrees taught in English in a EU/EEA country
