About the SnT

The University of Luxembourg is an international research university with a distinctly multilingual and interdisciplinary character.

The Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) at the University of Luxembourg is a leading international research and innovation centre in secure, reliable and trustworthy ICT systems and services.
We play an instrumental role in Europe by fueling innovation through research partnerships with industry, boosting R&D investments leading to economic growth, and attracting highly qualified talent. We look for researchers from diverse academic backgrounds to contribute to our projects in areas such as: Network Security, Information Assurance, Model-driven Security, Cloud Computing, Cryptography, Satellite Systems, Vehicular Networks, and ICT Services & Applications.

Your role

The successful candidate is expected to assume a leading role in defining, acquiring, managing, and scientifically contributing to projects in Artificial Intelligence on Space Robotics. The candidate will work closely with Prof. Olivares-Mendez and the members of the Space Robotics research group (www.spacer.lu).

The group works across the entire spectrum of space robotics research and applied research to conceive and demonstrate future paradigms on lunar exploration, anomalies/failures identification and prediction, in-space operations, assembly and manufacturing, active and passive space debris removal, XR immersive teleoperation, and multi-robot cooperation. Researchers interested in AI for space robotics will find a young and vibrant team of over 23 members (1 professor, 1 Research Scientist, 15 PhD students, 5 PostDocs, 1 Research assistant). SpaceR's state-of-the-art facilities include two physical laboratories, the LunaLab and Zero-G Lab, dedicated environments for researchers to test their results on advanced equipment.

This position is linked to the LunarAssembly project in collaboration with Prof. Christian Ott and Prof. Dongheui Lee from TU Wien. The main goal of LunarAssembly is to achieve a high-performance teleoperation system under large time delays. LunarAssembly combines force feedback teleoperation with autonomous agents trained by human operators on the ground, enhancing operator telepresence and system through an eXtended Reality framework. This integration aids decision-making and risk avoidance, reinforced by Intelligence Augmentation capabilities. It will be achieved through rigorous testing and refinement of the integrated system. It seeks to increase operational efficiency, safety, and precision while fostering more effective human-robot collaboration and reducing mental workload, improving operator performance by at least 20% compared to traditional techniques.

The candidate should develop the following tasks:

  • Research on AI for space Robotics and implement approaches in simulated and real robots
  • To support and lead top-10% journal publications submissions as first author and in collaboration with other PostDocs
  • (Co-)Lead AI research activities in the SpaceR team
  • Advise PhD students on AI
  • Support and/or lead project proposals
  • Lead project deliverables writing and submission
  • Support one or two courses on Space Robotics
  • Support Lab activities and experiments
