The Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C²DH) at the University of Luxembourg is an interdisciplinary research centre committed to high-quality research and public dissemination in the field of contemporary history with a particular focus on digital methods and tools.
The C²DH's ambition is to venture off the beaten track and find new ways of doing,
teaching and presenting contemporary history of Luxembourg and the history of Europe in the 20th and 21st centuries. It serves as a catalyst for innovative and creative scholarship and new forms of public dissemination.

The Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C2DH) is looking to hire one postdoctoral researcher in digital history. The Researcher will be hosted at the Digital Research Infrastructure Unit of C2DH and work within the interdisciplinary team of Research Scientists specialised in data management, analysis and visualisation alongside IT specialists, developers and designers. The Researcher will work transversally in close collaboration with colleagues from the Research Area of Digital History and the Research Area of Contemporary History of Luxembourg.

Your role

  • Employ a hands-on approach to evaluate the methods to link data about the history of Luxembourg from different sources and stakeholders to reflect a deeper understanding of the complexities of past lives and historical sources in Luxembourg
  • Develop a strategy to curate and preserve analogue and digital sources, databases and large datasets composed of these data within Luxembourg
  • Work in collaboration with a selection of data such as FNR Initiate project Luxembourg Time Machine" (LuxTIME) project and 'Local Sources' project in collaboration with the City of Dudelange and the Fondation Bassin Minière
  • Maintain a network of external stakeholders (archives, musea, libraries and public administration) within Luxembourg and be able to develop new connections to enhance collaboration, exchange and dialogue
  • Offer training in the use of digital methods or the analysis and disclosure of the contemporary history of Luxembourg to BA and MA students, PhD candidates and researchers at C2DH

The Researcher will employ a hands-on approach to evaluate methods for linking historical data about Luxembourg from various sources and stakeholders, aiming to achieve a deeper understanding of the complexities of past lives and historical contexts in Luxembourg. Additionally, the Researcher will develop a comprehensive strategy to curate and preserve analogue and digital sources, databases, and large datasets within Luxembourg.

Your profile

  • PhD in history, digital humanities, cultural heritage, media studies or related field (eg. digital archives and preservation, information studies)
  • Experience working with datasets from diverse sources, data preservation and archiving strategies
  • Ability to meet deadlines and demonstrate methodological, organised, pragmatic and effective approaches to the work
  • Team working spirit in a collaborative interdisciplinary environment using technology to conduct research as well as able to work independently
  • Excellent communication skills in English and either French or German is expected
  • Experience conducting outreach, training, or other public-facing work related to research or technology

Advantageous:

  • Good digital literacy and practice of selection, curation, interpretation and preservation of archival sources
  • Experience with one of programming languages (Python, Javascript, R) and/or data visualization tools (js, RawGraphs, Flourish)
  • Experience in coordinating projects especially interdisciplinary work in the humanities
  • Luxembourgish language
  • Previous teaching experience
