Meta-omic analyses of marine sedimentary samples


The Systems Ecology group at the LCSB has an immediate opening for a motivated and talented laboratory technician (entry- to advanced- level position) to assist with the extraction of biomolecules (DNA, RNA, proteins) from marine sedimentary samples in the EU-funded FET project PROSPECTOMICS.

PROSPECTOMICS is an international project with consortium members from the Universities of Duisburg-Essen, Greifswald, Luxembourg, and Vienna as well as from Lundin Energy Norway and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). This highly interdisciplinary project will investigate the effects of natural hydrocarbon leakage on the microbial communities in marine sedimentary systems in unprecedented detail.

Your Role...

You will support daily lab operations, including ordering lab supplies, sample organization and preparation, biomolecular extraction, protocol optimization, as well as interaction with project partners and platform personnel (internal and external). You will build on existing, world-wide distinctive approaches for the concomitant biomolecular extraction from single, unique samples developed in the Systems Ecology group at the University of Luxembourg. In close collaboration with the consortium members, you will define how samples collected from the field will be processed for downstream high-throughput omics measurements and generate extracts for use within the PROSPECTOMICS project.

Important technical competencies and tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Kit-based as well as non-kit-based extractions of biomolecules from environmental samples
  • Optimization and testing of new protocols
  • Troubleshooting of technical problems in sample preparation and extraction workflows
  • Interaction with project partners, e.g., coordination of sample shipment and storage
  • Thorough record keeping in a well-organized lab notebook
What we expect from you…
  • A Bachelor or Master degree (or equivalent) with wet-lab experience, preferably in next-generation sequencing (DNA, RNA) or mass spectrometry (proteomics)
  • Highly reliable and precise work style
  • Good organizational skills and willingness to work independently in phases of potentially little guidance from supervisor
  • Basic computer skills to ensure electronic record keeping and generation of work summaries, e.g., documenting quality and quantity results from different protocols
  • Attention to detail, especially accurate data entry and sample handling
  • Communication in English is essential, both written and spoken
