The Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences (FHSE) brings together expertise from the humanities, linguistics, cognitive sciences, social and educational sciences. People from across 20 disciplines are working within the Faculty. Along with the disciplinary approach a very ambitious interdisciplinary research culture has been developed.

The faculty’s research and teaching focuses on social, economic, political and educational issues with the common goal of contributing to an inclusive, open and resourceful society. The FHSE offers four Bachelor and 15 Master degrees and a doctoral school providing students with the necessary knowledge and high-qualified skills to succeed in their future career.

The University of Luxembourg invites applications for the vacancy in its Luxembourg Centre for Educational Testing (LUCET).

Your Role...

The doctoral researcher will conduct research under the guidance of a supervisory team, with the aim of studying towards a PhD (cumulative; i.e., based on peer-reviewed publications) in Science of Eduation. Integrated into LUCET’s “ÉpStan IPS” project, the doctoral researcher will investigate the newly established international public schools (IPS); a possible answer to a better management of diversity in Luxembourg’s highly heterogeneous education system. The doctoral researcher will investigate specifically how IPS students and students from the traditional public education system differ regarding socio-cultural and socio-economic background characteristics, achievement test scores, and educational pathways.


The doctoral researcher will competently analyze and integrate all information available to date on IPS (i.e., literature, data from official databases, large-scale data emerging from the Luxembourg school monitoring programme “ÉpStan”; Épreuves Standardisées). Following general research tasks are included in the responsibilities of the doctoral researcher:

  • conduct systematic literature research
  • apply state-of-the-art research techniques and psychometric methods
  • adapt existing assessment instruments
  • evaluate the psychometric quality of the aforementioned instruments
  • (co-)organize and (co-)supervise data collections in fundamental and secondary school
  • (co-)author peer-reviewed scientific publications and present research outcomes at international conferences
  • (co-)author project reports for national stakeholders
  • contribute to and support (on-going and future) research projects within LUCET
  • perform any other tasks within the framework of the position
What we expect from you…
  • Master in educational sciences, sociology, psychology, or a related discipline
  • Good knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methods
  • Good skills in using statistical software (e.g., R, SPSS, Mplus)
  • First research/professional experience (e.g., student research assistant) in the field of education
  • Experience with large-scale data is a plus
  • (Co-)authored peer-reviewed scientific publications are a plus
  • Very good oral and written competences in English are mandatory; German, French and/or Luxembourgish is a plus
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary and multicultural team
