Proactive computing paradigm applied to the e-training of students in medicine based on advanced simulators

Your Role...

Proactive Computing is a recent research field which aims at the development of new IT systems and software applications that work in a more autonomic way for the user's interests. Based on predefined scenarios, the system decides alone about its actions for reacting in a swift and best appropriate way to the changes in its environment, without the command of human beings: the user is no more involved in a continuous interactive loop with the system.

Students in medicine, in addition to theoretical lectures, need practice and nowadays they are trained with advanced simulators, for example by using hi-fi medical manikins which replicate some human pathologies and reactions to treatments.

These simulators need of course to be programmed and the proactive computing approach seems to provide a fitting solution. Moreover, tailor-made and on-the-fly programming could be achieved depending on past trainings and achievements of a particular student.

This multi-disciplinary and inter-departmental research project aims at exploring software engineering methods and practices in these fields, as well as developing proofs of concept on real medical simulators and measuring their effectiveness for actual students in medicine.

  • To prepare a doctoral thesis in computer science in the above-mentioned area, which implies scientific tasks such as to undertake relevant literature review, to conduct joint and independent research activities, to disseminate results at international scientific conferences/workshops and to (co-)author articles (with the supervisor) in peer reviewed scientific publications, etc.
  • To assist the supervisor, Prof. Denis Zampunieris in his teaching activities (exercises sessions only) and in his guidance of Bachelor/Master projects, one to three hours per week
What we expect from you…
  • Master’s degree in computer science or related field
  • Analytical mind, strong design and programming skills
  • Background in rules-based software systems and/or in distributed architectures, is an asset
  • Excellent command of the English language
