The Department of Chemistry in the Faculty of Mathematics and Science is seeking to recruit a Postdoctoral Researcher in Inorganic Chemistry starting October 1st, 2024, or as soon as possible after that for two years. The fixed-term position is part of the EU LIFE consortium project PlastLIFE (https://www.materiaalitkiertoon.fi/en-US/PlastLIFE) coordinated by the Finnish Environment Institute. The inorganic chemistry group at the University of Jyväskylä is part of this active consortium (https://www.jyu.fi/en/projects/plastlife-chemistry).

Plastics ending up in the environment is one of today's major environmental challenges. In addition to the chemicals in plastics, plastics and especially microplastics can accumulate chemical compounds and ions from the environment. Such enrichment of compounds increases the environmental impact of plastics, for example, when microplastics end up in organisms.

The aim of the chemistry team at the University of Jyväskylä is to investigate the tendency of different plastics to bind organic and inorganic compounds. The focus is on different recycled and waste plastic fractions. The second objective is to investigate the possibilities of utilizing the adsorption properties of recycled plastics in the manufacture of selective filters. The project aims at efficient filters that can be used to remove contaminants and recover valuable compounds from waste and process waters. 3D printing techniques are used as the main tools in the manufacture of filters.

Who we are looking for

We are seeking a skilled candidate who is highly motivated to promote new innovations in plastic recycling. A successful candidate should have the following:

  • Strong expertise in inorganic and/or organic analytics.
  • Experience in chromatographic analysis techniques.
  • Experience in chemical synthesis, especially polymer synthesis.
  • Knowledge about powder-bed fusion 3D printing techniques.
  • Doctoral degree in Chemistry or Chemical technology

Experience in BET, ICP, XRD, and thermoanalytical methods is considered an advantage for the applicant.

The duties, qualification requirements, and language skills of a postdoctoral researcher are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. The PhD degree required for the position must have been completed before the starting date. A trial period of six months will be used in the beginning of the employment.
