Assistant or Associate Professor in Signal processing, tenure track
The position will be filled from August 1st, 2022. The position is for a fixed term of 3-5 years.
Duties and requirements
The Faculty of Information Technology at the University of Jyväskylä is a significant and one of the main academic educators in the IT field in Finland. The Faculty is also very strong in scientific research and highly recognized in the academic rankings of world universities.
The university has recently launched a new bachelor, master, and doctoral program in engineering, and accordingly, the Faculty is expanding its research and teaching activities in signal processing. The new assistant or associate professor is expected to support the faculty strategy by carrying out topical and competent scientific research in co-operation with the existing staff and the stakeholders of the faculty. The elected person will also teach and take part in developing the study programs of the faculty as well as in renewing practical teaching methods.
You are the person we are looking for if you have appropriate experience and record in scientific research in signal processing and a continuous will to maintain your professional skills up to date. In research and teaching, we emphasize the following areas of signal processing: image processing and computer vision, audio signal processing, pattern recognition, and related robotics, and machine learning.
We seek applicants who have demonstrated excellence in addressing the above challenges. As a (tenure-track) faculty member, you are expected to complement the expertise of the staff by bringing complementary views, ideas, and visions into the community. You are also expected to teach signal processing courses in the bachelor’s and master’s programs.
In addition to research, the position of assistant professor includes teaching duties and doctoral training. Assistant professor directs undergraduate students, doctoral students, and postdoctoral researchers according to their career path stage. The continuous development of teaching and participation in other development and administrative tasks are also part of the job description of an assistant professor. The assistant professor to be recruited is expected to contribute to the responsibility for research projects in the field and to obtain funding for the research team.
We require a Doctorate in Technology or doctorate in a related field, an excellent record in scientific research, international publications, international networking, teaching, and, especially on the associate level, activity in applying for research funding, and in supervising MSc and Ph.D. theses. The applicant must state in his/her application which tenure track level (Assistant or associate) he/she is applying for. Salary is based on duty-specific job demands and personal performance according to the university’s salary system. A trial period of six months when first employed for the position.

-Up to five (5) most important publications, which must be numbered according to the list of publications
-A short research plan and a written description of the applicant's scientific research merits related to scientific activities and research management. This should include a statement on the obtained external funding and on the applicant’s responsibilities in the research projects accomplished with such funding
-Teaching portfolio, including applicant’s pedagogical approach, education, and teaching and supervision experience (see instructions)

The Faculty of Information Technology at the University of Jyväskylä is the first and largest in its field in Finland. The mission of the Faculty is to create a science-based digital future. In research, education, and stakeholder collaboration, the Faculty combines comprehensively the viewpoints of technology, information, organizations, business, and people. The IT Faculty employs 180 people and, currently, there are 2400 undergraduate students and 150 postgraduate students. Teaching is given both in Finnish and in English. Strong collaboration with companies and other actors in society is based on long-term research. The Faculty's research is organized through four areas of activity, which are computational science, software and telecommunications technology, information systems science, and educational technology and cognitive science. The Faculty traditionally has degree programs in the natural sciences and business, in addition to which a new degree program in technology was launched in August 2021.
