This role of Lectureship with initial Research Fellowship in Materials Modelling and Simulation (Education and Research) (Proleptic) will begin as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow which will start on the 2 January 2023 on a fixed term basis until 1 January 2025. This will then become a permanent Lecturer from 2 January 2025.

The role

We are seeking to appoint a Lecturer to join Exeter Technology Group (ETG) in the field of materials physics modelling and simulation. This appointment will be made on a 'proleptic' basis; with the possibility of an open-ended Lectureship at the end of the term of a two year postdoctoral research fellowship. During the fellowship the candidate will support with his/her expertise in modelling, a number of exciting and challenging industry driven projects and contribute towards development of new research ideas, publications and be involved in the management activities of the centre. It is expected that this involvement will also lead to successful research grant applications written independently or jointly with academic members of the Group or the Faculty. The successful candidate will be part of our dynamic Faculty and contribute to the exciting growth agenda to which the University is committed.

The ETG includes the Centre for Additive Layer Manufacturing (CALM) and the Centre for Alternative Materials and Remanufacturing (CALMARE) with extensive areas of research in materials and manufacturing.  CALM is a world leading centre in high performance polymeric AM focused on high temperature polymers and composites working with an extensive range of industrial partners on fundamental and applied research.  CALMARE is focused on recycling and sustainability of materials and processes including closed loop recycling of thermosets and thermoplastics, redesign of parts to ease recycling and monitoring of materials in process for zero production waste.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to apply their engineering and modelling skills to a wide range of novel materials and structures such as modelling of thermomechanical behaviour of polymers and composites, stress analysis and modelling of failure in complex AM structures, topology optimisation of complex designs, simulation and prediction of specific materials or part properties. 

About you

The successful applicant will hold a PhD in an engineering, physics or materials science with a strong background in computational modelling.  The applicant should have a strong record of publications and evidence of applying for research funding. S/he will have an active approach to inter-disciplinary research that will help to foster interactions both within the University and externally; the ability to engage in continuous professional development. S/he will also be able to demonstrate the aptitude for management and leadership.
