The University of Cologne is one of the oldest and largest universities in Germany. The Institutes of Art History, Musicology, Media Culture and Theatre, Linguistics, and Digital Humanities – Fächergruppe 1 – join efforts to promote the Faculty’s digitization process.

YOUR TASKS

The successful candidate will be expected to represent the full scope of the interdisciplinary and internationally oriented field of Ethnomusicology in research and teach- ing. The tasks of the professorship include the training of students and doctoral candidates in the field of musicology as well as the contribution to the academic administration of the Institute of Musicology and the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Participation in joint research activities of the University, the Faculty or the Fächergruppe will be expected as well as the successful acquisition and implementation of third-party-funded projects. You should be prepared to contribute to the Institute’s goal of broadening research perspectives, furthering digitization of research and teaching, and extending international collaboration.

YOUR PROFILE

You are an outstanding academic in the field of international music research. Your study background, publication record, and research plans are within or clearly relevant to the study of music from an intercultural perspective and take into consideration the complexity and diversity of the lived experience of music in social and cultural contexts. Your work is inspired by recent international debates in ethnomusicology and encompasses a broad spectrum of theoretical and methodological approaches. To promote the institute’s common goals we would welcome the integration of concepts from computational musicology in your work. While centering on ethnographic studies of traditional and popular musics from various regions of the world, you also take into account methods from other disciplines. Ideally, one of your focus areas includes the study of one traditional local music (culture).

The position is available as of October 1, 2024. Formal requirements are detailed in Section 36 of the Higher Education Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (Hochschulgesetz – HG NRW). As a rule, the teaching load comprises nine semester hours per week (i.e., two hours per week is one 90-minute course per semester).
