The German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the University of Cologne are jointly seeking for a scientist as
associated with a
at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the University of Cologne.
The DLR is the Federal Republic of Germany’s research centre for aeronautics and space. Its research and development activities in the fields of aeronautics, space, energy, transport, security and digitalisation are embedded in national and international cooperations. The main branch of the Institute for Software Technology is located in Cologne where approximately 100 employees explore new software technologies and apply them to the development of demanding software solutions for applications within DLR. Current research focus lies on software engineering, intelligent systems and machine learning, distributed systems, onboard software for space, interactive visualisation, data analytics and high performance computing. The University of Cologne is one of the oldest and largest universities in Germany. With its six Faculties covering a broad spectrum of disciplines and its internationally outstanding research profile areas, it enjoys an excellent reputation for its academic achievements and high standard of undergraduate and graduate education. The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences with its 186 professors and more than 12,000 students offers a broad spectrum of modern study programs, that are closely coupled with its wide variety of outstanding research activities.
We are searching a researcher with internationally outstanding scientific reputation and research activities in the area of software engineering with close connection to one or more of the areas model-based systems engineering, quality assurance of software, artificial intelligence and machine learning for software development, software technologies for high performance computing or high performance data analytics, exascale computing or new hardware technologies. In particular, knowledge of the area of quantum computing or the readiness to gain such knowledge are expected.
Several years of professional and leadership experience in academia as well as exceptional didactic abilities and academic teaching experience are expected. Experience in the management of international interdisciplinary research projects as well as in third party funding acquisition are desired. Formal application requirements are a doctoral degree and scientific achievements that are equivalent to Habilitation.
The successful applicant is expected to contribute to teaching activities of the computer science division at University of Cologne with a teaching obligation of two hours per week and semester.
The successful applicant will be employed as a professor at University of Cologne, where he or she is granted leave of absence in order to take over the management of the DLR Institute in Cologne (Jülich Model). Formal requirements are detailed in Section 36 of the Higher Education Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (Hochschulgesetz – HG NRW).
