Department: Mechanical Engineering
The role will broaden our aerospace research to encompass at least one of the following disciplines related to Future Flight: zero carbon propulsion systems; electric fuel cells; thermal management of liquid hydrogen systems; hydrogen systems integration; hybrid and distributed propulsion schemes; automated manufacture and process control for zero-emissions aerospace products; novel architectures for future aircraft.
You will contribute to next-generation propulsion and/or airframe technology leading to zero-carbon flight. You will undertake transformative multidisciplinary research and disseminate results via high quality academic publications. You will bid for grant income available from government and industry to underpin the rapidly changing research landscape and develop new industrial partnerships. Fourteen of the fifteen largest aerospace businesses have a significant manufacturing or research presence in the South West of England, providing a pull for industry-relevant research. You will, in addition, contributed to our highly successful Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering Degree programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate research level.
Facilitating aerospace industry engagement with a net-zero future is a major opportunity. The EPSRC Theme Strategy to balance capability is to “identify and tackle fundamental research challenges with the potential for lasting benefit to the UK”, citing the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) as a key source of evidence for the direction of aerospace research. This Chair is aligned with the ATI FlyZero initiative for the UK to achieve zero-carbon flight by 2035, and the recently published ATI Destination Zero strategy.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Bath is one of the largest in the UK, with 70 academic staff and 1450 students. We have a strong record in engineering research, particularly application-orientated research which leads to high impact and tackles some of the world’s major problems. In teaching, the Department has a sustained record of combining both high academic standards in engineering science with industrially relevant problem-solving skills. The latter are developed in our undergraduate courses through the long-standing focus on Design, industrial placements, and challenging design-and-make ‘competition’ projects. The five-year MEng with-placement programmes are undertaken by most of our undergraduates. In addition, our taught postgraduate programmes on engineering and engineering management topics have been significantly development in recent years. We rank highly in league tables (e.g. for 2022, 2nd in The Guardian, 3rd in The Times).
This position will support our new cross-Faculty Net Zero Transport research centre which is under development and is an expansion of the £70m IAAPS research institute with its new laboratory complex, which is one of the best equipped sites in the world for advanced propulsion systems research (IAAPS). It builds on 40 years of continuous propulsion research and education at the University and includes an EPSRC Centre of Doctoral Training (CDT), which in the current 5-year cycle is providing at least 86 fully funded PhD studentships. IAAPS has already broadened from its original automotive propulsion focus, and links with aerospace-related research on sustainable fuels, hydrogen and electrification. Other areas of expertise at Bath are aerostructures, gas turbines, aerodynamics, and autonomous systems. Sustainability is one of the University’s three research themes, and its Hydrogen Beacon is a rapidly growing activity.
