The Department of Political Science in the Faculty of Social Sciences is looking for a full-time (100%) doctoral scholarship holder in the field of International Relations

Position

  • You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis in the field of International Relations (more concretely: Historical International Relations, International Political Theory, International Political Anthropology). You will write your thesis in the context of the FWO-financed project A Genealogy of Peace: Change and Continuity in a Ritual Practice. The project takes a macro-historical approach to analyse conceptions and practices of peace in European history, from the Middle Ages onwards. The PhD student will be able to define their own empirical focus within the broad confines of the project.
  • You will publish scientific articles related to the research project.
  • You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for the Research Group International Politics and the Department of Political Science..

Profile

  • You hold a Master degree in Political Science, International Relations, Political Philosophy, Political Anthropology or a related field,  or you will have obtained it by the time you start work.
  • You can demonstrate excellent study results.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
  • Excellent knowledge of English is critical. Sound knowledge of German and French is desirable. Passive knowledge of Latin would be a boon.
  • Familiarity and experience with interpretive research methodologies are highly desirable.  

What we offer

  • We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed for another two years. This means you will have four years to prepare your PhD thesis.  
  • The planned start date is 01 October 2024 or as soon as possible after that date.
  • Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders on the pay scales for Contract Research Staff (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
  • You will receive ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
  • You will do most of your work at the Stadscampus in the Meerminne building in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
