The Department of Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy – MOVANT in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Care is looking for a full-time (100%) doctoral scholarship holder in the field of in vitro dermal scar research

  • You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis < on cellular and molecular responses of an in vitro dermal model following mechanotherapy (extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT)). Every year, 40-70% of the more than 80 milliondermal scars produced after surgical procedures, trauma, or burns develop into problematic hypertrophic scars.  Mechanical forces impact wound healing through mechanotransduction, triggering changes in gene transcription. Although mechanotherapy (e.g. ESWT) is currently used in clinical practice, the factors determining its effectiveness are not known. In this project, we aim to unravel how a mechanical stimulus provoked by ESWT influences cellular and molecular responses in different types of scar tissue. Using an in vitro dermal model, we will consider extracellular matrix stiffness and tissue traction forces. We will collect data on histological, cellular, and molecular scar responses after mechanotherapy.
  • You will publish scientific articles related to the research project.
  • You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for the bachelor and master programme Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy.

  • You hold a Master degree in Biomedical Sciences, Medical Sciences or Bio-Engineer or you will have obtained it by the time you start work.
  • You can demonstrate excellent study results.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
  • You must have a good knowledge of English, both written and spoken. You must have at least a basic knowledge of Dutch, a good knowledge of Dutch is an advantage.
  • Experience with the following laboratory techniques is an advantage: immunohistochemistry, western blotting (Elisa), and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) testing.

What we offer

  • We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed for another two years.
  • The planned start date is 1 October 2024 or as soon as possible after that date.
