UCLouvain is in the top 1% of universities worldwide. Founded in the heart of Europe in 1425, the university brings together 40,000 students and 6,000 staff members on 9 campuses in Brussels and Wallonia. Research and education activities are organised in 20 faculties, 23 research institutes, 5 learning centres and 18 libraries. UCLouvain also has two university hospitals.
UCLouvain is a major player in the transition to a sustainable society. The challenges of the ecological crisis are integrated into courses and the university develops numerous local projects (such as a university farm and sustainable campuses). As a digital university, UCLouvain is involved in open science and education, and trains academics in innovative teaching practices through its Louvain Learning Lab. Thanks to two science parks, the university’s research benefits from interaction with 250 companies and 3 incubators, which is fuelled further by being at the centre of a region driven by technological innovation.
UCLouvain has a long tradition of international collaborations for teaching and research through partnerships across the world. As a member of the Circle U. European University alliance, the university offers a unique opportunity to work in an environment of interconnected campuses across Europe (London, Paris, Berlin, Vienna, Pisa, Belgrade, Aarhus and Oslo).
The University's staff policy is based on five pairs of values which are fundamental pillars of the way the University operates, works and lives together: https://uclouvain.be/fr/emploi/politique-personnel.html
The Louvain Institute of Data Analysis and Modeling in economics and statistics (LIDAM) is a research institute that combines methodological and applied research gathering more than 200 researchers and consultants. The position to be filled will be in the ISBA pole (Institute of Statistics, Biostatistics and Actuarial Sciences), internationally recognized research center.
Within the Faculty of Sciences, the position to be filled will be located at the LSBA (Louvain School of Statistics, Biostatistics and Actuarial Sciences) which is in charge of the Masters in Statistics, general orientation and biostatistics orientation, the Masters in Data Science, statistics orientation and the Masters in Actuarial Sciences as well as of many statistics courses in other programs (bachelor and master level) of UCLouvain.
The ISBA and LSBA work closely together to provide a varied and stimulating teaching context and an ambitious research environment around methodological research projects, applied research projects and consultancy projects.
Within the Faculty of Science (SC) and the Louvain Institute of Data Analysis and Modeling in economics and statistics (LIDAM), Science and Technology Sector, this position will include the following teaching, research and community service duties:
You will teach in the field of statistics and data science. In particular, you will teach high-dimensional spatio-temporal data analysis, data analysis and time series analysis. Your teaching will be mainly in Masters in Data Science and in Statistics but you also will provide foundational statistics course for undergraduate students within the Faculty of Sciences, and potentially beyond, in other faculties within or outside the science and technology sector.
You will work with your LSBA colleagues to implement didactic innovation in your courses.
You will supervise master theses for students, based on your expertise.
You will develop your research activities, including the lead of research programmes, in the analysis and modelling of high-dimensional spatio-temporal data. You should also have the skills to deploy these methods in various fields of application, ideally with a strong societal impact, for example in geography, climatology or epidemiology. Your expertise should complement the existing knowledge in inferential statistics and mathematical statistics at ISBA. Your research activities should lead to collaborations within the LIDAM institute, with other UCLouvain institutes close to these domains (for example with the Earth and Life Institute - ELI), with the SMCS (Statistical Methodology and Computing Services) technological platform, and with other academic or non-academic partners.
You will publish high-level research articles in journals in the field of statistics, data science, and/or specific to the application domain. You will disseminate research results and scientific knowledge to both expert and non-expert audiences. You will strengthen the organization of the research team by, for example, taking on responsibility and leadership and supervising doctoral theses. You will inspire and supervise students while promoting equity and diversity.

You will also contribute to serving society, particularly in the economic, social, cultural or development cooperation fields. Finally, you will ensure, through research and teaching activities, the university’s international visibility.
You have a PhD in Statistics or Data Science (or comparable field). You have completed it with an extended study period abroad or significant experience outside your home institution.
You have a proven track record in university teaching, with evidence where possible by formal evaluations. Your scientific experience is demonstrated by publications of international standing.
You have supplemented this with an extended stay or significant experience abroad, outside the institution that awarded your doctorate.
You are comfortable working as part of a team of academics and integrate research results into your teaching. You are capable of conducting high-level scientific research, from obtaining funding to team management. You are creative, open to pedagogical innovation and multidisciplinary.
You can communicate in French and English. If this is not the case, you undertake to acquire a command of these two languages within two years of taking up your position. Knowledge of other languages is an asset.
Specifically:
You are a versatile statistician with a solid background in probability theory and statistical inference, but also experience in statistical and machine learning and the analysis and modeling of high-dimensional and time-series data, and can demonstrate an interest in statistical applications in a variety of fields.
It will be considered an additional asset if you can demonstrate one or more of the following skills:
- Willingness and ability to participate in internal and external training activities in the field of high-dimensional spatio-temporal and time series data analysis and modeling.
- Capacity to foster collaborations, such as supervising internships, theses, or projects with the non-academic sector and private industries active in your research areas.
Tenure after positive assessment of the probationary period – typically four years. This type of career entitles you to a public sector pension.
Appointment as lecturer or professor according to your previous academic experience, as determined by the Rectoral Council.
Teaching load capped at 90 hours for a full-time tenure-track position, and 150 hours once tenured.
An attractive and progressive salary according to seniority and the promotion process.
