UCLouvain seeks to recruit
An academic full-time in Actuarial Sciences
Main campus: Louvain-la-Neuve
UCLouvain is in the top 1% of universities worldwide. Founded in the heart of Europe in 1425, the university brings together 40,000 students and 6,000 staff members on nine campuses in Brussels and Wallonia. Research and education activities are organised in 14 faculties, 22 research institutes, five learning centres and 18 libraries. UCLouvain also has two university hospitals.
UCLouvain is a major player in the transition to a sustainable society. The challenges of the ecological crisis are integrated into courses and the university develops numerous local projects (such as a university farm and sustainable campuses). As a digital university, UCLouvain is involved in open science and education, and trains academics in innovative teaching practices through its Louvain Learning Lab. Thanks to two science parks, the university’s research benefits from interaction with 250 companies and three incubators, which is fuelled further by being at the centre of a region driven by technological innovation.
UCLouvain has a long tradition of international collaborations for teaching and research through partnerships across the world. As a member of the Circle U. European University alliance, the university offers a unique opportunity to work in an environment of interconnected campuses across Europe (London, Paris, Berlin, Vienna, Pisa, Belgrade, Aarhus and Oslo).
The university has a gender and inclusion policy which prioritises equity and respect. Working at UCLouvain means contributing to the development of every individual’s skills and promoting the values of equality, transparency and efficiency.
The position is attached to the Faculty of Louvain School of Management (LSM) and to the Louvain Institute of Data Analysis and Modeling in economics and statistics (LIDAM). EQUIS accredited and member of the CEMS and PIMS alliances, LSM was founded in 1897 and became a faculty on its own in 2010. The LIDAM research institute englobes as one of its research centers the Institute of Statistics Biostatistics and Actuarial Sciences (ISBA).
The Faculty of Science will be involved in the evaluation process of the candidate.
Within the Faculty of Louvain School of Management and the Louvain Institute of Data Analysis and Modeling in economics and statistics, Social Sciences and Humanities Sector, this position will include the following teaching, research and community service duties:
The teaching load will be mainly in the Master in Actuarial Sciences, managed by the Louvain School of Statistics, Biostatistics and Actuarial Sciences but you may also be assigned teaching in statistics and/or quantitative finance at the various programmes managed by the faculty LSM and by the LSBA. You will also direct master's theses in your area.
LSM and LSBA adopt a student-oriented learning philosophy based on interactivity, applied cases, student projects and continuous assessment. Courses are developed using a competency framework. Each teacher develops an individual pedagogical development pathway, to be implemented over a five-year period. The personal professional development enables each teacher to be effective for different audiences (bachelor, master, doctorate), sites and formats (lectures, seminars, evening classes, MOOCs).
The teaching load for a (tenured) professor in Actuarial Sciences in LSM/LSBA is defined as follows: a more generalist course in statistics and/or finance in a Bachelor or Masters program in LSM, and graduate courses in the Master's program in Actuarial Sciences, potentially a complementary course in another program and/or a course at another site of UCLouvain.
You will develop your research activities, including the animation of research programs, in the field of actuarial sciences, and particularly in risk theory, predictive modeling and statistical learning techniques in insurance. You will supervise doctoral theses in this area.
Your research in actuarial sciences will allow UCLouvain to continue its long tradition of excellence in both research and teaching in actuarial sciences, and in particular to maintain its excellent position in international rankings (e.g., 1st place in the world in the University of Nebraska (UNL, Lincoln, USA) ranking of the 50 best universities in the world in terms of scientific articles published in reference journals in the field of actuarial sciences) and to preserve the credibility of LIDAM with the actors of the insurance world. Your expertise in actuarial sciences will allow you to develop/maintain contacts with industry and/or to conduct interdisciplinary research in order to develop synergies within ISBA, and more broadly within LIDAM.
You should also be, or become, a member of the lnstitute of Actuaries and maintain regular contacts with them in order to guarantee the professional recognition of the training provided at UCLouvain and invest in the continuing education programs. You will also actively participate in the animation of the inter-university collaboration in actuarial sciences, both in terms of the existing cooperation between the master programs of the KULeuven, the UCLouvain and the ULB, the inter-university seminar under the aegis of the Nation Bank of Belgium, and the contacts with the world of industry.
Once tenured, you will carry out various service activities and responsibilities within the institution, such as being a member of a programme committee or examination committee, or having management responsibilities within the faculty or research institute.
You will also contribute to serving society, particularly in the economic, social, cultural or development cooperation fields.
You have a PhD in Mathematics, Statistics, Actuarial Science, Data Science or in a domain that can be considered as equivalent. You have extended experience abroad or at least outside your home institution.
You have a proven track record in university teaching, with evidence where possible by formal evaluations. Your scientific experience is demonstrated by publications of international standing.
You work well as part of a team of teachers and integrate research results into your teaching. You are capable of conducting high-level scientific research, from obtaining funding to team management. You are creative, open to pedagogical innovation and multidisciplinarity.
In actuarial sciences, courses are taught in French and in English. English is the language of research publications. You must be operational in both languages from the start. If this is not the case, you undertake to ensure that it is at the latest at the time of confirmation. Knowledge of other languages is an asset.
