Postdoctoral Position on the CMS tracker upgrade for HL-LHC

The experimental high energy physics group of the Université catholique de Louvain (UCL) in Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium) invites applications for one position at the post-doctoral level to join its efforts in the upgrade of the silicon tracker of the CMS experiment for the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC).

UCL has contributed significantly to the design and construction of the CMS silicon strip tracker and has been deeply involved in its commissioning before and after the LHC start-up. UCL is currently active in CMS physics data analysis and related physics object software development within the exotica, Higgs, top quark, forward, simulation, muon and tracking physics groups. UCL hosts one of the Tier-2 centres of the LHC computing GRID that allows CMS data to be processed and analyzed. Physics studies are pursued in close collaboration with theoreticians within the Centre for Cosmology, Particle Physics and Phenomenology (CP3, http://cp3.irmp.ucl.ac.be/) of UCL. A strong Monte Carlo tools team has resulted from this collaboration (MadGraph/MadEvent, Delphes, MoMEMta, ...). The group is also involved in the NA62 experiment at CERN.

The CMS UCL group is involved in the design and construction of the Phase-2 silicon tracker. We are setting up a production centre for outer tracker dees, and we are planning for the integration of one tracker endcap (TEDD) in house. We are contributing to the development of readout and test systems for the tracker silicon modules and we take part in beam tests of module prototypes.

The candidate should have experience in instrumentation, and is expected to make a strong contribution to the preparation of the CMS Phase-2 tracker upgrade. The selected candidate will lead the preparation of the clean room and of the test system (DAQ setup, CO2 cooling system, slow control, etc.). (S)he will join the final R&D phase, during which the outer tracker mechanics, the assembly and test procedures will be finalized, and during which the integration centres will be qualified. A contribution to data analysis is also possible in areas like double Higgs search (HH) and 2HDM search (ZA).

The selected candidate is expected to be based in Belgium with frequent visits at CERN as needed for the project.

Applicants must have (or expect to receive soon) a Ph.D. in particle physics. The position is opened to candidates of any nationality, but the candidate should be in the condition of international mobility (the researcher should not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (job, studies...) in Belgium for more than 24 months during the 3 years directly preceding the beginning of the present postdoctoral fellowship). Appointments are for two years with possibility of future extensions depending on availability of funds. The salary is competitive and includes all social security benefits (information is available on request). Contributions to teaching are possible but are not required. Although the positions will remain open until suitable candidates are found, interested persons are encouraged to apply before 28 February 2018, when the first application screening will take place. Applications, including cover letter, curriculum vitae, a list of publications and at least three letters of recommendation should be submitted online.

Skills/Qualifications

The candidate should have experience in instrumentation, and is expected to make a strong contribution to the preparation of the CMS Phase-2 tracker upgrade.

Specific Requirements

How many times have you been asked, “What do you research?” only to draw a complete blank or ramble on for minutes? Situations like these are why you need an elevator pitch.
