Postdoctoral Position on advanced analysis techniques applied to the CMS di-Higgs study

The Centre for Cosmology, Particle Phyiscs and Phenomenology (CP3) of the Université catholique de Louvain (UCL) in Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium) invites applications for a three-years position at the post-doctoral level to join the efforts in applying advanced analysis methods (Machine Learning and Matrix Elements) so to significantly extend the reach of CMS di-Higgs studies.

Research activity in CP3 is equally strong on the theoretical as well as on the experimental and instrumental fronts. It is conducted by 15 faculty members, several post-doctoral fellows and many Ph.D. students. The main experimental collaborations include the CMS experiment at CERN, NA62 and the Virgo GW telescope. The CMS members currently focus on data analysis and related physics object software development within the Exotica, Higgs, Top quark, and Forward physics groups. UCL hosts one of the Tier-2 centers of the LHC computing GRID that allows CMS data to be processed and analyzed. The group is also involved in research and development programs related to the upgrade of the CMS tracker for HL-LHC. On the phenomenological side a strong Monte Carlo development activity is present focused on the development of a wide range of tools, such as FeynRules, MadGraph, aMC@NLO, Delphes and MoMEMta.

In particular, CP3 is leading the phenomenological as well as the experimental studies in CMS of resonant and nonresonant di-Higgs production at LHC. After completing the run-1 analysis, we are now preparing for the legacy run-2 analysis, where we want to apply more advanced analysis techniques to enhance the sensitivity and maximize the information extracted in the context of Effective Field Theory (EFT). Our experience with modern Machine Learning and with the Matrix Element method provide a strong foundation for that work.

The selected candidate is expected to lead this effort, in collaboration with the promoter, Christophe Delaere, and PhD students, and in close contact with the CP3 phenomenology group of F. Maltoni. (S)he will be based in Belgium with frequent visits at CERN as needed for the project.

Applicants must have a Ph.D in particle physics for no more than five years or expect to receive it soon. The position is opened to candidates of any nationality, but the candidate should be in the condition of international mobility (the researcher should not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (job, studies...) in Belgium for more than 24 months during the 3 years directly preceding the beginning of the present postdoctoral fellowship). Appointments are for two years with possibility of future extensions depending on availability of funds. The salary is competitive and includes all social security benefits (information is available on request). Contributions to teaching are possible but are not required. Although the positions will remain open until suitable candidates are found, interested persons are encouraged to apply before 28 October 2018, when the first application screening will take place. Applications, including cover letter, curriculum vitae, a list of publications and at least three letters of recommendation should be submitted online at https://cp3.irmp.ucl.ac.be/Jobs/Details/CP3-18-MAXLHC-PD.

For more information, contact Christophe Delaere (christophe.delaere@uclouvain.be).
