The Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Technische Universität Darmstadt invites applications for a vacant
Professor of Numerical Mechanics (W3)
commencing in summer term 2022.
The Chair of Numerical Mechanics represents the discipline in research and teaching and acts interdisciplinary at the interface of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the other departments and the profile aereas of Technische Universität Darmstadt.
Research should focus on the following topics:
One focus of research will be the development of suitable tools for numerical modelling. In the foreground is the modelling of large- scale constructions in civil engineering (e.g. bridges, high-rise buildings, tunnels, etc.). Here the connection to the three-dimensional, digital representation and the methods of Building Information Modelling (BIM) is important. Virtual representation of structures is the basis for approaches to structural optimization. Here and in connection with the structural health monitoring of load-bearing structures and the evaluation of sensor data, there are also tasks for solving inverse problems.
The manufacturing processes and materials in the building industry (concrete, steel, wood, glass, polymers) with individual production and today's stronger process orientation require the provision of novel mechanical modelling methods and the further development of the finite element method as a building block of multi-scale modelling. It is also the framework for micromechanics. Part of this development are numerical tools for homogenization.
In addition to basic lectures on technical mechanics, lectures from the field of numerical mechanics will be offered in the basic subjects and the research-oriented special subjects in the German and, in future, English language teaching of the undergraduate bachelor's and master's programmes of the faculty. In addition, courses are to be offered in the interdisciplinary Mechanics Department of the TU Darmstadt. The application of new forms of teaching and learning is desired.
We expect a scientifically proven personality with excellent specialist knowledge and comprehensive practical engineering experience in continuum mechanics, also preferably acquired outside the university. In-depth knowledge is expected in several of the mentioned or equivalent research areas for the continuation and expansion of research. The readiness for national and international cooperation and for interdisciplinary work both within the main research areas of the department and with other departments is required.
The prerequisites are a degree in engineering followed by a qualified doctorate at a university and appropriate professional experiences (habilitation or habilitation-equivalent achievements), didactic and pedagogical aptitude, very good knowledge of German and English as well as the willingness to work in academic self-administration.
The position is tenured with a remuneration package commensurate with experience and qualifications, following the German
"W-Besoldung" and subject to negotiations between the applicant and the university directorate. The regulations for employment are specified under §§ 61 and 62 HHG (Hessisches Hochschulgesetz).
The Technische Universität Darmstadt intends to increase the number of female faculty members and encourages female candidates to apply. In case of equal qualifications applicants with a degree of disability of at least 50 or equal will be given preference.
The Technische Universität Darmstadt is certified as a family-friendly university and offers a dual career program.
Applications, including the usual documents, in particular curriculum vitae, list of publications, overview of teaching activities to date (incl. teaching evaluations), description of scientific activities, a teaching and research concept, and copys of relevant diplomas must be sent under the given code-no. to the Dean of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Technische Universität Darmstadt, Franziska-Braun-Str. 7, P.O. Box 10 06 36, 64206 Darmstadt, preferably in electronic form as a single PDF to: firstname.lastname@example.org
