At Tampere University, Hervanta Campus includes a unique research infrastructure focused on research and development of autonomous and electrified mobile working machines. Innovative Hydraulics and Automation (IHA) Laboratory has a long history of research in this area and close collaboration with industry both in Finland and Europe. IHA has and operates several full-scale mobile working machines equipped with state-of-the-art sensors and computing units, a 4000 square.m. fenced area with air-conditioned control room, the test area has 5G access, and a large warm workshop for storage and maintenance work. Beside efficient use of current equipment, IHA aims at maintaining as first class R&D laboratory as technology advances and improve on software infrastructure. The aim is to collaborate with other research groups from different faculties of Tampere University, other universities, as well as companies.

Academy of Finland has recently granted substantial amount to Tampere University to reinforce the area of System-on-Chip, Wireless Technology, and Robotics for Intelligent machines. This position is opened within this profiling area. In addition, the funding supports recruitment of new professors and postdocs in this area. Tampere University has very strong scientific track record in these areas, and we expect to boost them to international level and support Finnish high-tech export. Tampere region has built a unique ecosystem of industry and academy in the area of future mining, construction, forestry, and logistics. 

Job description

Staff Scientists are academic personnel who are responsible for specialist activities related to research, providing support to teaching and research staff. The responsibilities of Staff Scientists involve the use and development of research infrastructures and research equipment. Their individual job descriptions are defined in relation to the University’s strategic needs and include teaching, research, and the provision of services.

The primary tasks of the Staff Scientist to be recruited include supporting researchers in conducting research in the area of autonomous and electrified mobile machines, maintaining IHA’s first class research infra, and participating in planning and developing it further. This in part means promoting and enabling good software and hardware engineering practices and bringing the basic research to higher readiness level for integration to a larger software infra. Furthermore, taking care of the safety in the laboratories, performing public demonstrators, and producing public relation material is among the tasks. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to work with different groups who research and develop robotics for heavy machines and electrified working machines. Furthermore, the Staff Scientist is expected to participate in Master’s thesis supervision, and teaching. 


·    Doctoral degree in automation, mechanical, computer engineering, or related field

·    A good understanding of the autonomous and electrification machine technologies, such as sensors and computing technologies, and technology trends,

·    Experience and expertise in hardware and software engineering and embedded systems, 

·    Experience with Laboratory research and relevant mobile work machine equipment, 

·    Experience in teaching is appreciated,

·    Good scientific writing, presentation, and communication skills in English.

We offer

The position will be filled on a permanent basis. The appointment is expected to commence as soon as possible, as mutually agreed. A trial period of six months applies to all new employees.

The salary will be based on both the job demand and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the University Salary System. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of Staff Scientist is placed on the job demand levels 5-6. In addition, employees receive performance-based salary. The salary is thus approximately 3500-4400 EUR/month.
