Job Description

The Photonic Glasses Group, at Tampere University, is looking for one Doctoral Researcher to work on Optically active glass-based materials. The aim of the project is to develop new active glass channel waveguide to monitor water quality. The project involves developing new glasses and glass-ceramics that can be deposited into films with good quality (thickness control and uniformity, target chemical composition, good adhesion to the substrate, dense film with no pores/cracks/voids and stress free), waveguide fabrication and testing. This project is part of the IBAIA project funded by EU. 


 We are looking for a versatile and independent person with a solid background in glass science and Photonics and some knowledge in film deposition technology. The Doctoral Researchers must hold a Master’s degree in Materials Science or Physics and should have an excellent command of written and oral English plus good communication skills. The Doctoral Researcher candidates must have the competence and motivation to pursue postgraduate studies towards a doctoral degree (link to the doctoral program requirements: https://www.tuni.fi/en/study-with-us/doctoral-programme-engineering-and-natural-sciences#switcher-trigger--apply). 

Please note that before commencing in the position, the selected Doctoral Researcher candidates must also apply for a study right within the doctoral programme, unless they already have one. 

We offer

The position is filled for a fixed-term period of 2 years with a possibility of another two years (2+2). The position can be filled as from Nov 1st 2022 or as mutually agreed upon. A trial period of six (6) months applies to all our new employees.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of a Doctoral Researcher is placed on level 2—4 of the job requirements scale. A typical starting salary for Doctoral Researchers is approximately 2500 EUR/month. Employment includes occupational health care and social security benefits.
