Joint Position for Assistant or Associate Professor in Coastal Physical Oceanography

The Faculty of Biological Sciences (primary unit) and the Faculty of Engineering at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile invite interested candidates to apply for a tenure-track joint position as Assistant or Associate Professor to conduct interdisciplinary research in physical processes of the ocean and coastal zone. The applicants should demonstrate experience in oceanographic instrumentation, field measurements, geophysical signal analysis, and, ideally, modeling mesoscale physical processes and their propagation to coastal areas. It is of particular interest to recruit researchers with experience in interdisciplinary and collaborative research, combining aspects of marine biology and engineering or physics through experiments, simulation models, and field observations. The selected candidate is expected to promote interdisciplinary research and collaboration with other researchers from the Faculty of Biological Sciences and the Department of Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering -DIHA- (Faculty of Engineering) on broad issues related to the development of renewable marine energies, the resilience or adaptation of marine socio-ecological systems to climate change and natural hazards. The new faculty must establish his or her laboratory using and promoting, the experimental facilities and observational capacities of the Coastal Marine Research Station at Las Cruces (ECIM). Teaching should take place mainly on university campus located in Santiago.

RESPONSIBILITIES ASSOCIATED WITH THE ACADEMIC POSITIONS:

  1. To lead independent and internationally recognized research in coastal physical oceanography, at the interface biology-oceanography, and/or coastal processes Engineering.
  2. To perform interdisciplinary research at ECIM, fostering interaction with students and researchers from the Faculty of Biology Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering.
  3. To teach undergraduate and postgraduate students through leading lectures and laboratory courses, collaborate in the design and teaching of collegiate courses, and act as an advisor for undergraduate and graduate theses. In particular, the coordination of the undergraduate course in Biological and Physical Oceanography for marine biologists and one section of the course, Fluid Mechanics for engineers, is expected. In addition, the new faculty are encouraged to design new graduate courses. Teaching activities will be mainly concentrated in the Campus located in Santiago. A teaching certificate from the Centro de Desarrollo Docente is mandatory for all new faculty. 
  4. To train future scientists by advising or mentoring undergraduate or graduate research students.
  5. To obtain competitive external research funding.
  6. To participate in academic and administrative activities within the University.
  7. To develop outreach activities with an impact to the society and the general public.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Hold a PhD degree in basic engineering, earth science, mathematics, marine biology or oceanography, and demonstrated experience in coastal physical oceanography, and/or coastal processes Engineering. Postdoctoral experience is not mandatory but preferred.
  2. Ability to carry out independent research and get funding for research in the short term.
  3. Demonstrated capacity to teach at undergraduate and postgraduate level

SELECTION CRITERIA:

  • Trajectory, leadership, and quality of scientific contributions.
  • Experience in the proposed research area.
  • Recommendation letters.
  • Potential for academic progress and integration within the Faculty of Biological Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering.
  • Teaching experience
  • In identical conditions, preference will be given to women scientists or applicants from underrepresented groups.
