We are seeking a Senior Researcher or Researcher to enhance the research efforts of the Soil Ecosystems Group (MAEK) at Luke. The role of the Senior Researcher is to lead, implement, and develop research on soil animal ecology.

The MAEK group studies the factors influencing soil biodiversity and the role of soil organisms in forest, peatland, tundra, and agricultural environments. The group’s research focuses on applied topics related to the sustainable use of natural resources and is closely aligned with current themes in ecology and environmental research, including land use and climate change. Research is conducted with expanding national and international collaborations.

The aim of the position is to comprehensively utilize expertise in soil animal ecology in the study of various land ecosystems and to consider soil animal biodiversity and function. The focus can, however, be on specific environments, groups, or soil processes. The Researcher / Senior Scientist will participate in the planning, management, and implementation of research projects. The tasks include scientific publishing at the international level, applying research funding, and maintaining national and international collaboration networks.

Our expectations of the applicant
Successful performance of the position requires:

  • A PhD in soil, forest, or environmental science
  • Excellent knowledge of soil ecosystems, particularly the role and functioning of soil animals
  • Experience in planning and guiding soil ecological field and laboratory work
  • Strong skills in the quantitative analysis of research data
  • Proven experience in leading of research projects, high-quality scientific publishing, and applying for research funding
  • Fluent oral and written English
  • Excellent teamwork skills in research groups and networks

  • Level of position: Specialists
  • Remote work: Possibility to work remotely
  • Description of the remote work: Mobile work is used at Luke. This means that work is performed where it suits best. Mobile work is only possible within Finland, and the practices of mobile work are agreed with the supervisor. We also meet regularly face-to-face.
  • Reason for fixed-term employment: Nature of work
  • Working time format: Office working hours
  • Trial period: A trial period is 6 months.
  • Remuneration information: The position is at complexity level 9 - 11 in Luke's salary system and the position-specific salary is EUR 3910,89 - 4948,92 per month. In addition, a salary component based on personal performance will be paid (max. 50% of the position-specific salary). A new employee's personal performance component depends on competence and experience and generally falls in the range of 15-20 %. The applicant may also present a separate salary request.
