The International Max Planck Research School for Epigenetics, Biophysics and Metabolism (IMPRS-EBM) is a joint program of the Max Planck Institute (MPI-IE) and the University of Freiburg (Germany).
For our next recruitment call starting in January 2025 we are looking for talented and motivated students with a strong commitment to basic research and a passion for science, aspiring to work towards a doctoral degree in the fields of
Epigenetics, Biophysics, Metabolism, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Functional Genomics, Bioinformatics and Proteomics
What we offer:
Interdisciplinary research environment:
The program integrates strategies from molecular biology and biochemistry with biophysical and computational methods and is designed to equip doctoral researchers with the tools to study epigenetics from both a molecular biology perspective and through the lenses of metabolism and biophysics.
Laboratory rotations:
One of the distinctive aspects of our program is a rotation period. Doctoral researchers spend one month each in three different laboratories before starting their PhD project. This is an important step towards identifying a suitable laboratory for your PhD thesis, as it allows you to experience three distinct lab environments and provides further insight into particular research topics.
Structured training and intensive individualized mentoring:
You benefit from the supervision of the respective group leader, interactions within the laboratory and collaborations within and outside the MPI-IE. The progress of all IMPRS doctoral researchers is regularly monitored by thesis advisory committees. A broad curriculum complements the laboratory training. This additional training program covers four major aspects - advanced scientific training, transferable career-critical skills, career development and networking.
Access to state-of-the-art core facilities:
Currently, nine in-house scientific core facilities provide support in various state-of-the-art technologies and allow the implementation of highly sophisticated research projects.
Stimulating English language program in an international research environment:
We currently have 55 doctoral researchers from 25 countries and are proud of our growing alumni group which comprises more than 117 graduates.
Family-friendly offers and living in Freiburg:
The Institute offers a parent-child and breastfeeding room. A day care centre is affiliated with the Institute. Also, Freiburg is one of the most liveable cities where the Black Forest idyll meets cutting-edge science.
