The post-doc position is located in the group for Nanostructured Materials of Prof. Georg Schmidt at the Institute of Physics of the Martin-Luther-Universität, Halle-Wittenberg. In the group a proprietary process for the fabrication of free standing waveguides of yttrium iron garnet (YIG) has been developed and optimized [1]. These waveguides can host spin waves (magnons) with very long lifetimes, which, along with their small dimensions, allow for the study of various novel non-linear spin phenomenon.

The post-doc position is part of a collaboration investigating spin waves, their propagation and generation by new and novel routes, as well as other non-linear phenomenon, in YIG waveguides.

The tasks to be performed are:

  • Waveguide fabrication and transfer using electron beam lithography, focused ion beam lithography and pulsed laser deposition
  • Magneto-Optic Kerr Effect measurements to look at various novel spin-wave modes and their generation, as well as nonlinear processes and propagating spin-wave solitons within the waveguide
  • Simulation of some aspects of the samples for their optimal preparation.
  • Collaboration with project partners and with others in the group.
  • Presentation of the results at international conferences and events.

All these tasks will be performed in close collaboration with the group of PD Dr. Vladislav E. Demidov, Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster (WWU), Münster.

The group for Nanostructured Materials focusses on spin transport, spin dynamics, novel materials and high-resolution lithography. Sample fabrication is done in the cleanroom facilities of the university (200 m2/class 100, 400 m2/class 10000) where all necessary state-of-the-art equipment is available for thin film deposition and nano-patterning.

Candidates should have a diploma, master, or equivalent degree in physics or a related discipline. In view of the collaborative aspects, a good knowledge of the English language is preferable. It is desirable, but not completely necessary, that applicants have experience in at least one of the following topics:

  • Pulsed laser deposition (PLD)
  • Fabrication and characterization of YIG or similar thin films
  • Electron beam lithography or patterning by focused ion beam
  • Characterization of spin dynamics in YIG or similar
  • Experience with MOKE measurements
  • Micro-magnetic simulation software

The post-doc position (100%) is available for 27 months. The salary will be determined up to pay grade 13 TV-L depending on the assigned tasks and personal qualifications.

The Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg wishes to increase the proportion of its female staff and, by maintaining a family-friendly working environment with flexible working hours, improve family life and career balance. The Martin-Luther-Universität expressly encourages women as well, as candidates with children to apply. Moreover, these posts are applicable for candidates with disabilities, who will be given preference, if their personal aptitudes and qualifications are otherwise equal.

Applications and informal inquiries should be sent as soon as possible by e-mail to georg.schmidt@physik.uni-halle.de and should refer to Ad.# 5-6721/22-D. The application process will continue until the position is filled.

Please submit your application, including a cover letter (explaining background and motivation), your CV, and complete transcripts.
